Examples:

● He arrived yesterday. (When?)
● They live nearby. (Where?)
● Fortunately, we finished on time. (Sentence modifier)
They describe how an action is done.
● quickly, slowly, carefully, badly, well
● Example: She sings beautifully.
They tell us when something happens.
● now, yesterday, today, soon, already, recently
● Example: We will leave soon.
They indicate where an action happens.
● here, there, everywhere, nearby, abroad
● Example: He is waiting outside.
They tell us how often something happens.
● always, never, sometimes, often, rarely, seldom
● Example: She always drinks coffee in the morning.
They describe the intensity or degree of an action, adjective, or another adverb.
● very, too, almost, quite, enough, extremely
● Example: The movie was very interesting.
They modify the whole sentence or express the speaker’s attitude.
● unfortunately, fortunately, probably, honestly
● Example: Honestly , I don’t know the answer.
Position of Adverbs
● Adverbs of manner, place, and time usually go after the main verb or at the end of the sentence :
○ She speaks clearly.
○ We met yesterday.
○ They live nearby.
● Adverbs of frequency usually go before the main verb but after the verb “to be” :
○ She always arrives early.
○ They are often tired.
● Sentence adverbs usually come at the beginning or middle of a sentence:
○ Fortunately , we found the keys.
○ We have probably made a mistake.
