What is an Adverb?
An adverb is a word that modifies or describes a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or even a whole
sentence. It provides more information about how, when, where, why, or to what extent something
happens.
Examples:
She runs quickly. (How?)
He arrived yesterday. (When?)
They live nearby. (Where?)
Fortunately, we finished on time. (Sentence modifier)
Types of Adverbs
1. Adverbs of Manner (How?)
They describe how an action is done.
quickly, slowly, carefully, badly, well
Example: She sings beautifully.
2. Adverbs of Time (When?)
They tell us when something happens.
now, yesterday, today, soon, already, recently
Example: We will leave soon.
3. Adverbs of Place (Where?)
They indicate where an action happens.
here, there, everywhere, nearby, abroad
Example: He is waiting outside.

What is an Adverb?

An adverb is a word that modifies or describes a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or even a whole sentence. It provides more information about how , when , where , why , or to what extent something happens.

Examples:

● She runs quickly. (How?)

● He arrived yesterday. (When?)

● They live nearby. (Where?)

● Fortunately, we finished on time. (Sentence modifier)

Types of Adverbs

1. Adverbs of Manner (How?)

They describe how an action is done.

● quickly, slowly, carefully, badly, well

● Example: She sings beautifully.

2. Adverbs of Time (When?)

They tell us when something happens.

● now, yesterday, today, soon, already, recently

● Example: We will leave soon.

3. Adverbs of Place (Where?)

They indicate where an action happens.

● here, there, everywhere, nearby, abroad

● Example: He is waiting outside.

4. Adverbs of Frequency (How Often?)

They tell us how often something happens.

● always, never, sometimes, often, rarely, seldom

● Example: She always drinks coffee in the morning.

5. Adverbs of Degree (To What Extent?)

They describe the intensity or degree of an action, adjective, or another adverb.

● very, too, almost, quite, enough, extremely

● Example: The movie was very interesting.

6. Sentence Adverbs

They modify the whole sentence or express the speaker’s attitude.

● unfortunately, fortunately, probably, honestly

● Example: Honestly , I don’t know the answer.

Position of Adverbs

Adverbs of manner, place, and time usually go after the main verb or at the end of the sentence :

○ She speaks clearly.

○ We met yesterday.

○ They live nearby.

Adverbs of frequency usually go before the main verb but after the verb “to be” :

○ She always arrives early.

○ They are often tired.

Sentence adverbs usually come at the beginning or middle of a sentence:

Fortunately , we found the keys.

○ We have probably made a mistake.
