What is a Prepositional Phrase?
A prepositional phrase is a group of words that starts with a preposition and ends with a noun or
pronoun, which is called the object of the preposition. The object may also have modifiers (like
adjectives or articles).
Prepositional phrases function as adjectives or adverbs in a sentence. That means they either describe a
noun or verb by providing additional information such as location, time, direction, cause, manner, or
purpose.

Place: in, on, under, over, behind, next to, between, beside, above, below
Time: at, on, in, since, before, after, during, until
Direction/Movement: to, into, onto, from, out of, off, toward
Cause/Manner: because of, due to, by, with, according to, in spite of

Functions of Prepositional Phrases
1. As an Adjective (describing a noun):
The book on the table is mine.
→ “on the table” tells which book.

🔹 What is a Prepositional Phrase?

A prepositional phrase is a group of words that starts with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun , which is called the object of the preposition. The object may also have modifiers (like adjectives or articles).

Prepositional phrases function as adjectives or adverbs in a sentence. That means they either describe a noun or verb by providing additional information such as location, time, direction, cause, manner, or purpose.

🔹 Common Prepositions:

🔹 Functions of Prepositional Phrases

● A prepositional phrase never contains the subject or the main verb of the sentence.

● You can have more than one prepositional phrase in the same sentence:
