The Past Continuous tense is used to describe actions that were happening at a specific moment in the past. It allows speakers to express what was in progress at a particular time, often setting the scene for other past events.
This guide explains the structure, common uses, and examples of the Past Continuous tense so you can use it effectively in your writing and speaking.
The Past Continuous tense describes actions or situations that were ongoing or in progress at a certain time in the past.
The Past Continuous is formed with:
was/were + present participle (verb + -ing)
Examples:
● I was reading a book at 8 p.m. yesterday.
● They were playing football when it started to rain.
We use “was” with singular subjects (I, he, she, it) and “were” with plural subjects (you, we, they).
This is the primary use. The action was happening continuously over a period in the past.
Examples:
● At 7 o’clock, I was having dinner.
● Yesterday afternoon, they were studying for the exam.
The Past Continuous can describe two ongoing actions happening at the same time in the past.
Examples:
● While I was cooking , she was watching TV.
● They were talking and laughing all evening.
We often use the Past Continuous to show a longer action that was interrupted by a shorter action.
Examples:
● I was walking home when it suddenly started to rain.
● She was sleeping when the phone rang.
Examples:
● He was always losing his keys!
● They were always arguing about something.
Examples:
● We were staying at a hotel during the summer holidays.
● She was working on a big project last month.
Past Continuous vs Past Simple
● Past Continuous focuses on the ongoing nature or background of an action in the past. Example: I was watching TV at 9 p.m.
● Past Simple focuses on completed actions. Example: I watched a movie last night.
Often, both tenses appear together to show an action in progress and an interruption.
