READ THE CASE STUDY BELOW. THEN, COMPLETE THE WRITING TASK. CASE STUDY SITUATION: You have a class with two distinct types of students. You write this entry in your teaching journal: Some of the students in my class are young adults, ages 17 or 18. They have a lot of contact with English through music, the internet and television. They do not worry much about making mistakes or taking risks when speaking. They seem well motivated although they have difficulty concentrating on tasks for long. Other students in the class are adults in their 30s or 40s. They have not had much contact with English, and do not feel very connected to the language. They also have not studied in a formal setting for many years. They are well motivated, but seem to be afraid of taking any risks with the language. They depend on each other during tasks and tend to translate everything I say and everything in the book. The two groups do not like working together and avoid each other in class. Submit the following writing task about the case study. Base your response on relevant information from the lesson, the face-to-face session as well as your own experience. CASE STUDY ASSIGNMENT:
- How can you modify your lessons to take into consideration the learning factors described here? - If this were your class, how would you take into account these learning factors? - Give specific examples of actions that will allow you to address both groups simultaneously. - Your response should be a journal entry about one or two paragraphs in length. You may include steps from a lesson plan. RESPONSE: To begin with, teaching different-aged students may be really complicated sometimes. Also, letting them know that I care about that, no matter the age, because with teenagers, for example, they feel like they have a lot of problems or desires that want to share; as well as adults because even when most people don’t realize this, teachers are not only educators, but also friends with some students, and I try to make sure my students understand that, so in different opportunities, my adult students also came to me to discuss their personal stories. I consider this an essential part of teaching because even when you don’t hear every single student’s
