You have a class with two distinct types of students. You write this entry in your teaching journal: You and a colleague are receiving training on communicative competence. In one of the breaks, your colleague tells you about her class: I think these ideas about communicative competence are important. I can see now that there's really more to language than just grammar and vocabulary. I wish I could implement these ideas in my class to help my students sound more natural, and to help them be able to use English in real situations. Unfortunately, some of my university students don't see an immediate need to use English for communicative purposes and therefore are not interested in improving their speaking or listening skills. These students are in disciplines which do not require proficiency in English and are only taking English because it is required. Submit the following writing task about the case study. Base your response on relevant information from the lesson, the face-to-face session as well as your own experience. CASE STUDY ASSIGNMENT:
- How can this teacher help students see the need for communicative competence? - If this were your colleague, what ideas could you give about teaching communicative competence to all students? - Give specific examples of actions the teacher can take to motivate students to carry out real communicative tasks and to improve speaking and listening skills? - Your reply should be one or two paragraphs in length.
First, we need to define the concept of communicative competence; which is known as the ability to know what to say, to whom, in what situations, and how. Getting there is somehow difficult for some students. We need to learn what kind of vocabulary, intonation and even expressions to use in order to have a successful conversation. For some students it may sound boring because as exposed in the case, they don’t truly have the intention to learn or at least they don’t find it necessary. Communicative competence focuses on understanding how the relationship between the speaker and listener affects language. Getting students to comprehend and then use what they have been learning is a difficult task for any teacher at any level. Getting students to enjoy what they are learning can be an even bigger task. A lot of talking must be done by the students as they start practicing what it’s like to actually have the words roll off of their tongues. They shouldn’t just sit in class and listen as the teacher lists every exception to a grammar rule.
