Welcome to our irst Hong Kong edition of PERI Scope, showcasing six interesting projects, aswell as our work with the Construction Industry Council and of our products which are ideal for the Hong Kong construction market, DUO, ALPHAKIT, and VST Heavy Duty Shoring Towers.
Our recent Civil Engineering projects stretch across the Hong Kong SAR. The M+ Museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District is the new museum for visual culture in Hong Kong, focusing on 20th and 21st century art, design and architecture, and provides a fascinating challenge to construct. The West Kowloon Rail Terminus, which will house the only station within the HKSAR section of the Express Rail Line to the mainland, has an iconic roof structure, and will cut commute time to Guangzhou to just 48 minutes. Further south, the Shatin to Central Line Cross Harbour Tunnel, contract SCL1121, was accelerated thanks to PERI Formwork Systems TRIO and DUO. In the North of Hong Kong, at the Liantang Bound- ary Control Point, PERI DUO is being utilised to construct 11 buildings. This ultra light, labour saving formwork enables the construction cycle to be accelerated and reduces the construc-
tion cost. The variety of building projects ranges from building works on SCL train staitions, to the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation Center, Ngau Chi Wan.
PERI has a number of products that are tailor made for the Hong Kong market. Our ALPHAKIT is a light weight, high strength shoring system. It provides an allowable leg load of 300 kN, and is completely man handle-able, requiring no crane for assembly. It is ideal for heavy duty civil works. In residential developments, the Hong Kong construction industry is facing tough challenges in the years to come; a shortage of skilled workers, and a high demand for residential buildings. PERI DUO is the solution. A simple formwork system to build safely, quickly and economically.
Our hydraulic climbing systems, for cores, safety screens and formwork, combine excellently with DUO form- work to offer the optimal solution for residential and commercial high- rise projects.
Whilst PERI is well known for its formwork and scaffolding systems around the world, we are less well known here in Hong Kong, our newest market. I hope you ind time
to enjoy this issue of PERI Scope, and thereby familiarise yourself with some of the exciting projects PERI are involved in, in Hong Kong.
As a family owned and operated company, PERI continues to be 100% focused on the development of formwork and scaffolding systems that will create beneits for all of our customers. We irmly believe that the lourishing of Hong Kong as a pros- perous and dynamic city lies, among others, in the strength of its institutions and businesses, for that reason it is our ambition to join efforts with public organisation’s and private construction company’s to continue propelling the development of our city.
As ever, we thank you for your coni- dence in PERI and look forward to working together on your next project.

decks and integrated walkways for ergonomic material and personnel movement. PERI’s world leading logistic ability enabled 2,000 tonnes to be shipped and supplied over a short period so that no delays were caused. In one location a ticket booth at basement level meant a large clear spanning portal was required, here PERI used their high load capacity aluminum MULTIPROP to easily over-come this and provided the JV with a comprehensive solution.
As one of the safest scaffolding systems in the world, PERI UP pro- vides system integral advantages. Not only during scaffold assembly operations, but also when the scaf- folding is being used. The continuous metric grid afforded by the PERI UP Flex Scaffold System ensures that scaffolding installation, to suit building geometry and site vehicles can be systematically and lexibly carried out; there is no time consuming tube and itting assembly. The 250 mm height increments provides the opportunity to create safe working platforms. Moreover, the small number of diffe- rent system components accelerates assembly while the resulting gap free installation achieved through the use of system decking means there are no overlapping planks and subsequent tripping hazards during use.
Detailed 3D scaffold planning, as well as the early consultation and coordina- tion with all project participants has
increased both work safety and eficiency. Scaffolding planning with PERI CAD enables the PERI team to coordinate proposed solutions in advance with the project partners.
The features of PERI UP Scaffold System allowed the JV to build one of the largest scaffolds ever construct- ed in Hong Kong in a short period of time, and to construct the scaffold safely, while matching the complex building geometry. The 3D models provided by PERI gave clear direction to the frontline erectors, enabling the drawings to be easily followed, thus reducing the requirement to inspect as built structure. Other factors, such as material cost, work- loads, erection time and service life
are integrated into the planning pro- cess and the scaffold equipment can be dynamically allocated to sub areas of the project based on the needs of the various trades.
As a result of this additional beneit, a project management team can access deviations in the execution compared to what was planned.

Express Rail Link Project
John Campbell, Construction Director: “PERI UP Scafold provides us with great lexibility and high eiciency. The system has a short learning curve and with the simplicity of it, we could stick to our planned schedule of construction.
PERI‘s ability to deliver a huge amount of high quality equipment on such a short notice is the key reason we chose PERI as our partner, we believe that no other company could have supported us on this scale of project.”

Adrian Ferguson, Sub Agent: “We are delighted to work alongside PERI with providing our project and client with technical solutions backed up by enormous project experience and ability. This system has given our project a solution of adaptable temporary storage at a fraction of the cost of ware- house rental”

One of the storage facilities constructed.
On the basis of PERI UP Scaffolding System, LGS provides dry storage space, at site or stockyard.
In addition to supplying access scaffold on the Express Rail Link project, PERI provided a total of 8,000 m^2 of covered storage to Leighton-Gammon JV. Four warehouses were provided with the use of PERI UP Flex Weather Protection Roof LGS. This provided LGJV with much needed dry storage space for their façade and glass works.
Temporary and protective rooing facilities can be quickly and easily realized. The system can be used for jobsites during the typhoon season, allowing works to continue without any delays, or as dry storage facilities as in this case.
LGS (Lattice Girder System) structure is designed to accommodate large spans, high loads, and Hong Kong climate conditions.
The roof is assembled in single movable girder segments. By doing so, it allows the easy opening of the roof, e.g. for the delivery of materials. The crane lifts the complete segment quickly and safely into position after pre-assembly on the ground.
It also provides a high level of safety both during assembly as well as use. As an option, the roof can be designed as a movable version, whereby it can
travel on rails, allowing customers to easily slide the cover to the area where works are on going. Due to the limited and costly supply of covered storage in Hong Kong, LGS can be used as an alternative solution. With its high adaptability and fast erection, complete weather protection can be realized, with different inclinations and geometries to suit any requirement.
PERI are looking forward to provid- ing weather protection solutions to further projects in Hong Kong so you can build through the monsoon season.

Located in the centre of the West Kowloon Cultural District, M+ is Hong Kong‘s new museum for visual culture. The museum occu- pies an area of approxi- mately 60,000 square metres, and is comprised of a 14 storey tower, a 3 storey Podium and a 2 storey Basement.
For the challenging con- struction of this building, on top of the MTR airport express line, one of the most important transporta- tion networks in Hong Kong, 5 concrete-steel composite mega trusses are under construction. The trusses span above the rail tunnel in West Kowloon, enabling the
support. To do this an ingenious arrangement of steel trusses and shoring towers was planned. PERI provided a total of 60 VST towers, with heights varying from 6.50 m to 15.50 m and an average leg load of 600 kN. For these towers several non-standard conigurations had to be designed, notably, double legged towers, situations where two legs had 15 m and 2 had 6.50 m and towers with very small dimensions in plan view. In addition, PERI performed preassembly work at the stockyard, provided site assistance with an on-site supervisor, and followed a “just-in-time” delivery

Contractor Hsin Chong Field Service PERI (Hong Kong) Limited
Gabby Lu, Engineer, production team: “The high quality and adaptability of the equip- ment are the benchmark of PERI. Basically, every component of the VST Tower is manually adjust- able to it our require- ments for a lawless assembly.
Most importantly, PERI cares about our needs. We received enormous support from all depart- ments especially the engineering team, who provided us with compe- tent and professional technical advice throughout.”
Telescopic base & head plate allow site tolerances to be easily achieved. All connections are pinned for fast assembly and high bending moment connection.
M+ Museum to be erected without any interference to the existing structures. The mega trusses will transfer the loads from the inished museum onto piles built at each side of the cut and cover tunnel structure.
The construction method for these mega trusses is noteworthy. The dirt cover of the tunnel is removed to allow a maximum loading of 30k N/m^2 on the top slab of the tunnel, as indicated by the original designer of the tunnel. Our client, Hsin Chong, designed an intricate temporary works scheme in order to spread all the construction loads and obtain suficient area of

scheme, meaning clients advise one day prior which tower would be erected and preassembly work would be arranged. Optimal services were provided to the client, hence reducing labor costs and time con- suming tasks.
Heavy-duty shoring towers with a high load capacity. Standard heights of up to 40m are possible – proof is provided for larger heights on an individual basis. Operating the head spindle when fully load is possible.
Fast assembly with bolted connections and pre-assembled tower segments up to 10 m.
Simple height adjustment through moving hydraulics with which the head spindle can be operated when under full load.
Cost-effective solution as all system components are available in the PERI stockyards.
The RCS Climbing Protection Screen together with Guardrails provide gap-free protection for work carried out on the building shell loors. The screen completely encloses the top loors of the building shell which are under construction. The enclosure protects site personnel against falling and strong winds at great heights, thereby enhancing construction eficiency. Landing platforms can be integrated in the RCS protection panel solution, allowing fast and simple transport of materials. The screen at the same time is served as widely visible advertising space.
Cross Harbour Tunnel accelerated
with PERI System Formwork
Contractor Penta-Ocean-China State JV Field Service PERI (Hong Kong) Limited
SCL 1121 will extend East Rail Line from Hung Hom. The Cross Harbour Section includes the construction of the 4th harbour railway tunnel in Hong Kong, and it connects Hung Hom and Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter. This 1.7 km cross-harbour tunnel beneath Victoria Harbour will be built by using immersed tube tunnel construction method, comprising tunnel units pre-cast at the casting yard in Shek O.
PERI TRIO was supplied for a 5 month period to enable Penta-Ocean-China State JV to accelerate the completion of the tunnel segments. The TRIO panels were supplied with propping, access walkways, certiied crane lifting device, formwork ties and handrails. It was a simple case of lifting the panels from the delivery vehicle directly into position so that rebar could be placed and concrete poured. PERI provided an
onsite formwork instructor for the irst two months of construction to assist site personnel and familiarize the operatives with the system. The embedded safety, ixed tie positon and integrated platform access signiicantly reduced safety risks on site, thereby minimizing the super- vision requirements. TRIO proved once again that can perform in many markets, and we look forward to utilizing this pro- duct on many more projects in Hong Kong.
As a global leader in the manufacturing of shoring systems, PERI provides clients with enormous lexibility by offering a wide range of props that can suit virtually any geometry as well as different loads.

PERI DUO contributing to
cross-border transport development
Contractor Leighton Contractors (Asia) Ltd. Subcontractor United Engineering Safe Work Ltd. Field Service PERI (Hong Kong) Limited
Jack Maharjan, Project Manager: “DUO provides us with great lexibility compared to traditional formwork. Its extremely light weight enables faster manual erection and striking. With DUO, construction time and labour cost are reduced, and the safety standard together with the quality of concrete surface formed is enhanced. We are more than happy to recommend PERI DUO Formwork to others.”
Reducing crane usage to the minimum level, DUO provides simplicity and enhances eficiency throughout the entire construction process.
As the seventh land crossing between China and Hong Kong, Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) will connect with the Shenzhen Eastern Corridor and provide an access to eastern Guangdong, facilitating future regional cooperation and development.
Leighton Asia is the sole contractor for the construction of a passenger terminal building and nine other main ancillary buildings including ire and police bases, vehicle examination buildings and a number of bridge
structures. The total construction loor area of all buildings in the project is about 157,400 square metres. Seeing the advantages of DUO, subcontractor United Engineering have embraced the system and are enjoying the labour and cost saving beneits. United Engineering need to deliver 150,000 m^2 of formed concrete, and DUO is helping them achieve their targets.
Over 1000 m^2 of DUO Formwork Panel is currently being cycled to achieve impressive results. The formwork is
no longer a constraint in the construc- tion speed, rather the availability of substantial work fronts.
The X-Ray Vehicle Inspection Inbound wall, was one of many structures completed with DUO. The 12 m high wall was poured in 2 lifts of 6 m. The unique features of DUO allowed the form to be assembled by hand on the irst pour, before being struck in gangs and lifted easily to the next pour.
Columns, T-Junction walls, pile caps, monolithic pours and standard build- ings are among the many structures that United Engineering have utilised the system on, and the results have been the same in each case; a good concrete inish, fast assembly, a high level of safety and reduced labour requirement. DUO offers a real alternative to traditional formwork methods in Hong Kong.
Engaging with customers
DUO workshop and seminar with HKCIC
PERI embraced the opportunity to connect with the one and only statuto- ry body in the Hong Kong construction industry, the Construction Industry Council (CIC). On 4 July 2016, PERI’s irst HK customer training was held at the Council’s training centre in Kowloon Bay.
Following the success of the irst workshop, PERI organized another DUO Formwork and Plywood seminar for CIC formwork instructors at our stockyard on 29 December 2016. The seminar was comprised of the following sessions: introduction of
PERI as the leading manufacturer of formwork and scaffolding systems, basic concept regarding the use of PERI DUO and a practical session where participants could experience one of the most powerful features of the product – the extremely low weight.
Being aware of the challenges that Hong Kong faces, a shortage of workers and the need to meet a high demand for new residential properties in a short time, DUO aims to be the best ally of the Construction Industry in Hong Kong because it is
eficient, versatile and economic. One of our main interests is to continue work- ing with the CIC and our clients in joint efforts to ensure the safety of workers. DUO Formwork incorporates scaffolding components that can be combined with other PERI scaffolding to ensure greater safety. We irmly believe that the lou- rishing of Hong Kong as a prosperous and dynamic city lies, among others, in the strength of its institutions, for that reason it is on our best interest to join efforts with the Construction Industry Council and other public and private organizations to continue propelling the development of our city.
