Acidosis ruminal

Definition: It is an eating disorder, which affects both beef and dairy cattle, and is caused by the excessive accumulation of VFAs (volatile fatty acids) in the rumen. This accumulation is due to: Consuming plenty of low-fiber, high-starch carbohydrates. Insufficient supply of buffer substances in the rumen and/or inadequate adaptation of highly fermentable diets.

The decrease in rumen pH

provides:

The release of endotoxins.

These cause the synthesis of

histamine, which is a substance

related to damage to the

epithelium, producing ruminitis

-Consequence of repeated transient periods of moderately low rumen pH that are not sufficient to trigger the clinical symptomatology of acidosis -The rumen pH drops to values ranging from 5.2 to 5. -Decrease in DM dry matter consumption and CA feed conversion efficiency -Loss of body condition -Decreased milk production and fat content -Lower fiber degradation rate -Less consistency of stool -Laminitis, liver abscesses and abomasal displacement occur. CLASSIFICATIO N
