SUMMARY

Is an effective summary condenses a passage

into a much shorter form, communicating only

the essential facts of the original. Summarizing

is not the same as paraphrasing.

(Summary Writing, 2003)

  1. Use summaries to communicate the main points of a text. In order to identify the main point. it ought to answer the questions who , what , where , when, why , and how in a general way don’t include a lot of specific facts and data from the passage to be summarized (Summary Writing, 2003)
  1. Use your own words. This will help to understand the text better. Quotations should be employed sparingly, and only in instances where you need to communicate specific phrases used in the original. (Summary Writing, 2003)

4. Write objectively.

Summaries should not report your opinion on the

matter, but should accurately reflect the author’s ideas

and style.

(Summary Writing, 2003)

CHARACTERISTICS

The overall thesis of the text selection is the author’s central theme. There are several aspects to an effective thesis statement:

  • It comprises two parts: a) the topic or general subject matter of the text, and b) the author’s major assertion, comment, or position on the topic. ( Five Keys to Writing Effective Summaries , 2014)
  • This central theme is summarized clearly and accurately in a one sentence thesis statement.
  • The thesis statement does not contain specific details discussed in the text.
  • The thesis statement is stated at the beginning of the summary ( Five Keys to Writing Effective Summaries , 2014)
  • Indicate the author’s purpose in writing: to inform, to persuade, or to entertain. If the passage is a persuasive piece, report the author’s bias or position on the issue.
  • Omit all personal opinions, ideas, and inferences. Let the reader know that you are reporting the author’s ideas. ( Five Keys to Writing Effective Summaries , 2014)

HOW TO WRITE IT?

  1. In your own words, write down the main points of each section.
  2. Write down the key support points for the main topic, but do not include minor detail.
  3. Go through the process again, making changes as appropriate. (John M. & B. Feat., 2007)
