Assignment 3: A critical analysis of “HER” by Spike Jonze Manuel De La Vallina Kalloi Toronto Film School WFT101: Cinematic Language Prof. Vladimir Paskaljevic 13/09/

Abstract A poignant exploration of human relations in an increasingly digital interconnected world. Her" (2013), directed by Spike Jonze, is a thought-provoking science fiction film that delves into the complexities of human connection in a digital age. Set in a near-future world, the story revolves around Theodore, a lonely and introverted writer who forms an intimate relationship with Samantha, an advanced artificial intelligence. In this analysis we’ll explore the movie’s themes, style, genre and form - delving into concepts of loneliness, emotional isolation, and the blurred boundaries between human and artificial relationships through stunning visual aesthetics, exceptional performances, and a compelling narrative.

An intimate exploration of human emotions. HER’S narrative form is somewhat episodic, it explores complex human emotions such as loneliness, vulnerability, intimacy, nostalgia, heartbreak – it invites us to contemplate the nature of these emotions inspecting the particular bond forged by Theodore and Samantha, punctuated by moments of connection, growth and conflict – the film’s form is heavily character-centric, we (the audience) are intimately connected with Theodore’s perspective throughout the story, which enhances the emotional impact and immersion in the story’s world, we get to generate a bond with the character which I believe gets very personal, it brings out sentiments we’ve all felt in our lives, and it does so with such profoundness and exposure that it feels personal, it feels sad, and to generate this kind of attachment - I believe that’s the final goal of a story, to generate this bond, to wake up emotions and makes us feel alive – this movie does so masterfully, and that makes it, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful films in the past decade - capable of touching deep inside all of us. It finally encourages reflection, the film’s form leads to an open-ended conclusion that doesn’t neatly tie up all loose ends or provide easy answers, instead, it leaves room for interpretation and discussion, encouraging viewers to consider the implications of the story’s events, the film ultimately invites us to contemplate how technology can both amplify and challenge our ability to connect in so many levels. A dystopian philosophical fiction HER defies easy categorization within a single genre due to its unique blend of elements; you could say it is a science fiction film, as well as you could say it’s a romantic film, or a drama, with even comedy traits – it incorporates several genre characteristics, making it (in my opinion) a hybrid film that encompasses all of the previous elements, but let’s dig into it to find the most accurate label. For starters, the film is firmly rooted in a near-future, high- tech world with advanced artificial intelligence and futuristic technology. This backdrop is a hallmark of pure science fiction, but, at its core, HER is a romantic drama that explores the emotional complexities of love and relationships, as the central plot revolves around the unconventional romance between Theodore and an AI operating system – digging into the details and up and downs between the connection of technology, humanity, consciousness and the boundaries of love - the film places a strong emphasis on character development and the emotional journey, which is a key characteristic of romantic drama, but, again, HER delves into philosophical and existential themes, such as the nature of consciousness, the impact of technology on humans, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world. These explorations belong to science fiction. In the end HER is a genre-defying film, its originality and thought-provoking nature make it even more complex to defy, but at the end of the day, my definition would be a Romantic science-fiction drama. Yeah, not much of a discovery.

An existentialist disconnection I think the central theme in “Her” is quite obvious as it is represented constantly and with quite mastery by Joaquin Phoenix; loneliness, isolation, emotional bonds. Theodore and many other characters in the film grapple with deep feelings of loneliness despite living in a highly connected and technology advanced society, but with this I think Spike intended to represent just the opposite; technology has overpassed the human connections, something that’s already happening. By hoping to fill the void with technology, society only made it bigger, this attempt of replacement by forming intimate connections with artificial intelligence results in human disconnection, on keeping us away from each other – it raises questions about the nature of love, of human intimacy, and how genuine emotional relations have been lost within the years thanks to technology. The film touches on the theme of identity and self-discovery particularly in this context of how technology influences our understanding of ourselves. Theodore’s journey involves rediscovering his own identity as he connects with Samantha and confronts his past. “HER” is a beautifully crafted film, I think it is intellectually stimulating because it resonates in so many levels. Its exploration of human emotions, technology’s impact on relationships, and the search for connection in a modern world make it a thought-provoking and memorable cinematic experience! While it may not be for everyone, those willing to engage with its themes and unconventional narrative will find it to be a deeply rewarding and emotionally resonant film.
