  • I think my AvGeek really came out today. 1: (dramatic music) 1: Massive, massive Antonov 124 Ruslan freighter just arrived. 1: 400 tonne of freighter behind me, 1: and today I'm very lucky to document 1: the whole loading experience, 1: and then going to fly on this Antonov 124. 1: (dramatic music)

So we're going to go inside the Antonov, follow me. 2: (engines whir) 2: It's actually empty. 2: It looks like it's ready to take the cargo soon. 2: Design of the plane is being self-sufficient 2: when the plane arrive at any destination, 2: doesn't need additional infrastructures. 2: They have all these plywood here, 2: and you can see all these tubes 2: used for loading, offloading. 2: And I can see some tyres. 2: Check out how many spare tyres, 2: one, two, three, four, five, six. 2: Everything is carried in the plane just in case 2: they need additional support, everything is here. 2: It's unbelievable, isn't it? 2: Vladimir here just joined me. 2: He's the head of the load planning here. 2: He's going to explain to us what exactly is happening. 2: How many crew here usually doing the loading and unloading? 3:

  • [Vladimir] We have a six-people flight crew, 3: and we have a seven-people technical crew. 3: All these guys are licenced engineers. 3: This crew is capable to repair aircraft,

And then extension ramp will be built 4: at front of aircraft, the same angle. 4: (energetic rock music) 4:

  • So while they're setting up to load the cargo 4: let's go upper deck to take a look at the cockpit. 5: I never climbed to a cockpit like this. 5: This is quite a challenge to come up a set of stairs 5: just to get up, Upper Deck here. 5: Ha, oof! 5: Unbelievable, unbelievable cockpit. 5: Six men operating this Antonov 124. 5: It's a huge office. 5: I've never seen a huge cockpit like this 5: Unbelievable. 5: (dramatic music) 5:
  • This aircraft was designed in 1970s, 5: and this aircraft still modern aircraft. 5: Even that time, 5: they designed control for aircraft fly-by-wire. 5:
  • [Sam] Wow, in the design 1970s, fly-by-wire. 5:
  • Yeah, but it's absolutely reliable. 6: Very good aircraft control system. 6: And, of course, our airline working on modernise aircraft. 6: And you see here, new multifunctional display

to help pilots to control aircraft. 6: To see navigation we instal new radar. 6: It's better quality and more suitable 6: for international flight. 6: And you see when they sit in here 6: you are at the altitude of 10 metres. 6:

  • Yeah, one of the highest cockpits in the plane, I guess. 6: (sombre music) 6:
  • Navigator workstation. 6: We have here navigation computer, 6: navigational equipment, multifunctional display, 6: long-range navigation system. 6: Another navigation computer using GPS. 6: And it use GPS and Russian navigation system as well. 7: This is chief flight engineer. 7: His responsibility is engine systems, hydraulic systems, 7: air conditioner system, fire system. 7: He has his own computer, allowing him to control 7: almost everything on this aircraft. 7: This position is flight engineer 7: of electric system. 7: His responsibility is energy, electric, batteries. 7: And these flight engineer 7: actually normally change their positions.
  • Yes, yes, you can sleep here. 8:
  • Yeah, so you can have six beds really. 8: Very cool, very cosy. 8: I also like the colours, 8: I like the flowers actually, obviously. 8: My mother is a fan of these. (laughs) 8:
  • But actually, now we are entering 8: to the forward technical compartment. 8: And in this compartment located many, many systems. 9: Fuel support, electric system, inertial system 9: And as well we have here fire system. 9: Belongs with fire gas 9: for emergency. 9: This equipment is actually a reducer 9: that is retracting flaps when we fly 9: to make aircraft in landing or takeoff configuration. 9:
  • It's really eye-opening to see the crew rest 9: right behind cockpit, such a big crew rest. 9: Avionics at the back, and incredible, just incredible, 9: built in the '70s like this. 9: And one more interesting thing, look at the plane. 9: You can see through from the front to the back. 9: There's not many planes that can do that, 9: and this is quite a unique feature.

It's unbelievably complex operation. 9: Now you see behind me the crane has arrived. 9: The crane will be helping to bring the cargo 9: to get loaded into the front door. 9: (energetic rock music) 10: So the crane now has started to load the cargo. 10: Shortly we'll load into the aircraft, 10: but we're not allowed to see the cargo. 10: We're not allowed, actually, to film the cargo. 10: It's very sensitive item. 10: Typically on the An-124 it carry oversize cargo 10: such as generators, such as aircraft engine, 10: satellites, mobile hospital for humanitarian purposes. 10: Also the oversize haul cargo. 10: So I just found out today the Antonov 10: is taking 21 tonnes of fuel for the flight to Toulouse. 10: (energetic rock music) 10:

  • Just looking around the aeroplane 10: and checking condition of engines. 10: Surface of landing gears. 11: (speaking Russian) 11:
  • Today we are preparing for flight. 11: Volga 2612 from East Midlands to Toulouse. 11:
  • Cruising level, it will be two niner zero.

they going to put a tow bar back in. 13: And now I'm actually going to sit in a hidden place, 13: which is the cabin crew rest, 13: which is actually here, above me there. 13: So it's 10-meter high where it is. 13: A complete separate compartment to the cockpit. 13: This is the aft cabin crew rest. 13: Wow, this is hidden, look at this! 14: It's like a passenger cabin inside a cargo plane 14: Antonov 124, this is quite cosy here. 14: (energetic rock music) 14: And then this is actually a loadmaster station. 14: You can actually listen, too, 14: but only if you understand Russian. 14: You can listen to the communications in between. 14: And actually I found many, many interesting things. 14: This one here is for shoeshine, 14: so you can sit here and do your shoes. 14: Get rid of all your dust on your shoes, very cool. 14: And this is for your jacket, 14: get rid of all your stuff on the jacket. 14: So while you're sitting down, this is the entertainment. 14: Shoeshine or jacket shine, which one you like? 14:

  • [Tower] Volga 2612, stand one zero seven,

push approved to face east. 15:

  • [Crewman] Pushback has now been approved, 15: facing east, Volga 2612. 15: (engines whine) 15: Volga 2612 request startup. 15:
  • [Tower] Volga 2612, start approved 15: and I have your clearance when you're ready to copy. 15:
  • [Crewman] Startup approved, 15: and we are ready to copy clearance, Volga 2612. 15:
  • [Tower] Volga 2612 cleared to Toulouse, 15: that was a three November departure, 15: squawk zero five seven seven. 15:
  • [Crewman] Volga 2612 request taxi. 15:
  • [Tower] Volga 2612, minimum power. 15: Leave Gate One via Foxtrot, taxi initially. 15: Hold at point Alpha Seven for Runway Two Seven. 15: Tune into nine nine four hertz Brussels. 15: (engines whine) 16:
  • I was keeping these earplugs, 16: but who use earplugs if you're an AvGeek on the Antonov? 16: The noiser, the better. 16: These guys were loading the plane. 16: Now they're going back, changing their shorts. 16: It's like coming back home.
  • Crew is very tired because they've been working 18: since 7 a.m., like eight hours of work. 18: Now, you know, it's very warm in the cabin 18: and it's better to take a nap. 18: So it's really, really a weird experience 18: during the trip here that there's no window, 18: you can't see, but you feel the boom 18: and sometimes there's a bit of shaking, turbulence, 18: up and down, a little bit vibration. 18: You can think about it as a Jumbo upper deck, 18: a 747, pretty similar, this is quite cosy. 18: Or you can think about even you're in a spaceship, 18: something, a military aeroplane. 18: I think my AvGeek really came out today. 18: You can see I'm so much more excited 18: when I'm seeing the plane and flying the plane. 18: I've been up since 5 a.m. this morning, 18: but now it's about 5 p.m., 12 hours later. 18: (engines hum) 18: (energetic rock music) 19: We got mac and cheese, 19: sausage casserole, Cajun beef. 19: This is the main course, heated up in the oven. 19: The food tastes pretty good on Volga-Dnepr Airline.
  • [Tower] Volga 2612, bonsoir. 19: Continue descent, flight level one four zero, 19: proceeding to north one eight two. 19: Expect level of entering ILS one four eight. 19:
  • [Crewman] Expecting ILS approach one four eight, 19: descent at level one four zero, 19: Volga 2612. 19:
  • It's coming down. 19: (engines roar) 20: (rumbling) 20: We just landed, that landing was so smooth. 20: Although we're in a tube, we can't see it, but I love it. 20: It was feeling like raw aviation. 20: This plane, designed in 1970s 20: when pollution was not a problem, 20: fuel barrels not a problem, noise is not a problem. 20: It's just raw aviation, incredible experience, 20: I certainly just really, really enjoyed. 20: This made my day, or this made my year. 20: Thumbs up. 20: Vladimir, thank you for giving me 20: the Antonov 124 experience. 20: I hope you guys keep transporting heavy-lift cargo 20: and keep flying the Antonov Ruslan in the sky.
