Makanan manusia. Daerah asal jagung diperkirakan berasal dr. benua Amerika dan sejak ribuan tahun lalu mrpk tan. yg dipelihara orang-orang Indian. Biji & janggelnya ditemukan di gua-gua di Meksiko + 4500 th. Ada 2 lokasi diperkirakan daerah asal Jagung : Areal pertanaman mulai dr. daerah beriklim sedang panas, sub tropik dan tropik. Di Indonesia dikenal + 400 th lalu, pertama kali dibawa orang Portugis dan Spanyol.
