Answer ANY TWO of the following questions. You may make reference to
authors you discussed previously on your mid-term assignment, but you must
include substantial reference to new textual material and avoid duplication of
argument.
1. How effectively do Romantic writers make use of language to advance their central ideas?
Discuss in relation to two or more writers on the course.
2. Discuss the value placed upon spontaneous actions and/or emotions by at least two writers
on the course.
3. The Romantic period is full of images and narratives of the abnormal, the distorted and the
unnatural. Discuss this topic in relation to two or more writers.
4. Discuss the depiction of gender and/or gendered concerns in the work of two or more
writers on the course.
5. Consider the use of imagery and themes of purity and/or corruption in the work of two or
more writers on the course.
6. Compare and contrast the ways in which at least ONE poet AND at least ONE prose writer
on the course comment upon Romantic ideals.
7. The artistic aspects of Romanticism cannot be separated from its social, political and
historical contexts. Do you agree or disagree? Discuss with reference to two or more
writers on the course.
