PARTS OF UNIVERSITY LOGO:
The five- pointed star is the Signum Fidei star. As a sign of faith, it is the symbol of the La
Salle Brothers (Fraternum Scholarum Christianarum). The five points bisected into green
and white areas represent benevolence, civility, humanitarianism, service-created goals,
and scientific pursuit.
The two fronds of laurel are the Gloria Et Honor laurel. They signify inspiration for quality
education.
The stallion in the middle of the logo is the Knight of the Grand Cross and Lieutenant,
Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchers of Jerusalem Achievement, that was awarded to
the founder, Don Salvador Araneta (in 1953)
"FOR GOD AND COUNTRY", in Trajan Pro Bold typeface, states the founding philosophy
of the university.
The open book on the lower part of the seal signifies the new knowledge, experience,
and expertise that the university is committed to create.
The '1946', in Trajan pro Bold typeface, represents the founding year of our institution.
The banner with the name 'De La Salle Araneta University' in Trajan Pro Bold typeface,
serves as a border around the upper portion of the seal.
The arc of triangles serves as the representation of Aranetan culture, as seen on the face
of our Life Science Building, the main building of the university.
A series of curves was adopted for the rim to form an arc of scallop. This serves as an
ornament to the university logo.

TEACHERS: THE KEY TO EDUCATION (there was a need for teachers)

  • whose whole lives were dedicated to teaching
  • who taught for the love of God and not for monetary gain
  • who were competent and zealous
  • who witnessed to gospel values
  • who put the welfare and salvation of students before their own
  • who could go wherever they were and do whatever was required to make the schools succeed

CHALLENGES IN THE 1 7 TH^ CENTURY

1. Routine cruelty towards children ➢ A pedagogy of “touching hearts” through love, kindness and care 2. Abandonment of children by working parents ➢ Teachers acting in loco parent is from morning till evening 3. Corruption through bad companions and peer pressure ➢ Modeling, character formation 4. Alienation from the Church and ignorance of the faith ➢ Religious instruction and initiation in the Christian life. 5. Inaccessibility of quality education to the lower classes ➢ Quality schools accessible to the poor 6. Lack of trained teachers with altruistic motives ➢ Teacher training and spiritual formation 7. Irrelevant education in poorly run schools

THE JOURNEY OF THE FATHER AND HIS DISCIPLES

  1. Becoming aware of the human and spiritual distress of youth
  2. Contemplating and reflecting on these needs in light of the gospel
  3. Forming a brotherhood devoted to schools for the liberation and salvation of abandoned children

➢ Offered terminal primary education in 2-3 years ➢ Classes of 80- 100 ➢ Catechesis was the chief priority ➢ Poorly trained teachers with poor instructional methods ➢ Latin as medium of instruction following the classical tradition ➢ Regular use of humiliation and beatings in place of classroom management

DLS’s OBSERVATIONS

➢ It is only too common for the children of the working class and the poor to allow their children to live on their own, roaming all over as if they had no home. The parents have no concern to send their children to school because they are too poor to pay teachers

SIGNS OF THE TIMES

HUMAN DISTRESS - Poverty, ignorance, parental neglect, lack of employable skills, criminality, violence, social marginalization, no access to relevant quality education SPIRITUAL - Religious ignorance, alienation from God and the Church, vice and immorality, “spiritual death”
