The Nature and Characteristics of Research: A Comprehensive Guide, Summaries of Natural Resources

An in-depth exploration of research, its nature, characteristics, and the steps involved in the research process. It delves into the systematic and controlled approach of research, the importance of empiricism, validity, reliability, and the various activities involved in the research process such as identifying the problem, reviewing information, collecting data, analyzing data, summarizing results, and drawing conclusions.

THE NATURE AND

CHARACTERISTICS

OF RESEARCH

What is research?

A systematic, controlled,

empirical, and critical

investigation of

hypothetical propositions

about the presumed

relations among natural

phenomena(Kerlinger,1973)

What makes research

controlled?

 It is so planned every step of the way that fancy guess work do not set in.

  • problem is defined thoroughly
  • variables identified and selected
  • instruments carefully selected and constructed -conclusions drawn only from data yielded
  • recommendations are based on

Characteristics:

  1. EMPIRICAL
  2. TAKES VARIETY OF FORMS
  3. SHOULD BE VALID
  4. SHOULD BE RELIABLE
  5. SHOULD BE SYSTEMATIC Empiricism- the doctrine that all knowledge is derived from sense experience Empirical- evidences are derived from research data

RELIABILITY

Concerns with the replicability and consistency of the methods, conditions, and results of research

ACTIVITIES IN THE

RESEARCH PROCESS

IDENTIFYING THE

PROBLEM

REVIEWING

INFORMATION

COLLECTING DATA

ANALYZING DATA

DRAWING CONCLUSION

DATA COLLECTION

 before data collection, measuring instruments must be identified and developed  (^) in descriptive narrative, researcher must organize for taking field notes  in ethnographic research, researcher collects data through various procedures such as interviews and observations  (^) if experiment is conducted, the experimental treatments are conducted just before or during data collection  in survey, measuring instruments are administered

ANALYSIS

results of the study

are generated when

analysis is done

field notes are

organized and

synthesized

data are summarized

statistical analyzes

are completed

ASSIGNMENT 1

 (^) You are given a copy on the topics related to the unit. Prepare different concept maps to illustrate your understanding, analysis and synthesis of their contents.  (^) Leaders will present the concept maps by posting these in brown Manila papers for everyone to appreciate next meeting.  (^) Points for the group work: 10 points for completeness, 10 points for appropriateness, 10 points for clarity of presentation. Total of 30 points
