The Golden touch
King Midas was a very rich king. He was so rich that one of the rooms of his
palace was filled with gold. If there was anything he loved best, it was gold. Every day
when king Midas had nothing to do he would stay alone in his room which was filled
with gold.
There he would count his bags of gold. He had all kinds of gold. He had yellow
and white gold. He had big and small pieces of gold.
One day while king Midas was counting his gold, he saw a stranger in his room.
How surprised king Midas was! He knew that no one could get into the room
other than he. But the stranger smiled at him.
"You have more than enough gold, Midas," said the stranger. "Who are you?"
asked king Midas.
"Where did you come from?"
"I'm a friend, ' answered the stranger. "Are you happy with your gold?"
"Happy?" Said king Midas. "Not at all. But if i can have all gold i want, I'll be the
happiest king in the world ".
"Is the gold in this room not Enough for you?" Asked the stranger.
"No it's not," answered king Midas. " I wont be happy with only a room full of
gold."
"What more do you wish?" Asked the stranger.
King Midas thought for a few seconds. He knew then that the stranger could be
the one of the gods. And because he was a god, he could give him every wish he would
make.
So Midas thought of the wish he would make.
At last king Midas said, "I wish that everything I touch would turn into gold."
"Do you really wish that?" Asked the god.
"Yes, I do," answered king Midas.
"Think over your wish very carefully," said the stranger. "Make sure you won't be
sorry for it."
"Of course not," said king Midas. "I want gold and more gold. I wish that
everything I touch would turn into gold. Then I'll be the happiest king in the world."
"Very well," said the god. "You shall have your wish. As soon as the sun shines
tomorrow, you shall have the golden touch."

The Golden touch

" I wont be happy with only a room full of gold." "What more do you wish?" Asked the stranger. King Midas thought for a few seconds. He knew then that the stranger could be the one of the gods. And because he was a god, he could give him every wish he would make. So Midas thought of the wish he would make. At last king Midas said, "I wish that everything I touch would turn into gold." "Do you really wish that?" Asked the god. "Yes, I do," answered king Midas. "Think over your wish very carefully," said the stranger. "Make sure you won't be sorry for it." "Of course not," said king Midas. "I want gold and more gold. I wish that everything I touch would turn into gold. Then I'll be the happiest king in the world." "Very well," said the god. "You shall have your wish. As soon as the sun shines tomorrow, you shall have the golden touch."

The strange man waved his hand. Then all of a sudden, he was gone. The sun was shining when king Midas opened his eyes the next morning. He wanted to find out if his wish had come true. So he dressed hurriedly. Lo! His clothes tuned into gold. How heavy they had become! But they looked nice with their shining, yellow color. Of course, king Midas was very happy about it. He touched his bed. The bed suddenly turned into gold. He ran to the door and touched it. The door turned into gold, too. Everything he touched turned into gold. He went down to the garden. He touched the plants. The flowers and even the stems turned into gold. Now, he could have all the gold he wanted. So happy was king Midas that he sang as he went around in the garden. He kept on touching everything along his way. "Pretty soon, I'll have a garden of gold," said king Midas. "But I'll keep my golden touch a secret to my daughter. I'll just give her a flower as i used to do." So king Midas picked a pretty flower after another. But they all turned into gold. There wasn't a thing he touched that did not turn into gold. This time, king Midas became sad and lonely. He could not even pick a fresh flower to give his daughter, Marygold. "What should I do?" Cried king Midas. "Now, I feel hungry. I'm afraid the food I will touch will also turn into gold." King Midas thought for a while. He was worried about his golden touch. “I’ll try to drink a glass of milk," thought king Midas. And he did. Alas! The milk turned into gold as soon as it touched his mouth. King Midas could not drink even a drop of milk. "How can I ever eat now," he cried. "I never thought that even the food I touch would also turn into gold. " King Midas didn't know what to do. Just then an idea came to his head. "Maybe if i move fast enough, I can eat the food before it can turn into gold, "he said to himself. So he got a piece or bread and put into his mouth as fast as he could. "Ouch!" King Midas cried. The piece of bread had turned into gold. King Midas looked at the food on the table. How nice they seemed to be. But he couldn't eat them. The more he looked at them, the hungrier he became. "What shall I do now? He cried again.
