Background Information Background Information: Buddhism is now the fourth-largest religion in the world. It has approximately 500 million followers, known as Buddhists. Buddhism began in a place called Lumbini in an area of ancient India now called Nepal. The founder of Buddhism was a prince called Siddhartha Gautama , who was born around 563 BCE. In an effort to understand the truth about life, Siddhartha practiced meditation. Through this, he eventually achieved enlightenment. Afterwards, he travelled around India, sharing what he had learned. People who followed Siddhartha, called him the, Buddha (The word ‘Buddha’ means ‘enlightened’ or ‘awakened’ one) because they believed he was awakened to the true nature of reality. Buddhists live all over the world but the majority of the Buddhist population live in China, Nepal, Japan, Sri Lanka and other South Asian countries. One day, seated beneath the Bodhi tree (the tree of awakening) Siddhartha became deeply absorbed in meditation, and reflected on his experience of life, determined to penetrate its truth. He finally achieved Enlightenment and became the Buddha. One night at the age of 29, Siddhartha left his home quietly leaving his wife, son and all the royal comforts behind in search of peace and truth. ... Siddhartha now got transformed into 'Buddha' or 'enlightened' and the pipal tree under which he got enlightenment became Bodhi Tree. Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism who later became known as “the Buddha,” lived during the 5th century B.C. ... After six years of searching, Buddhists believe Gautama found enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi tree. Background Information. Background Information By finding the path to Enlightenment , Siddhartha was led from the pain of suffering and rebirth towards the path of Enlightenment and became known as the Buddha or 'awakened one'. He was born into a royal family in the village of Lumbini in present-day Nepal, and his privileged life protected him from the sufferings of life; sufferings such as sickness, age and death. One day, after growing up, marrying and having a child , Siddhartha went outside the royal palace where he lived. When he went outside he saw, each for the first time, an old man, a sick man, and a corpse. This greatly disturbed him , and he learned that these were the inevitable fate of human beings - a fate no-one could avoid. Siddhartha had also seen a monk, and he decided this was a sign that he should leave his protected royal life and live as a homeless holy man in search of peace and overcoming suffering.
