The Safe Zone
Myth: An Unfree Future
Section 1: OVERVIEW OF THE SAFE ZONE LIE
A worldwide nuclear emergency was declared in 2094. The globe had grown too unsafe,
according to the world government. People were moved into "Safe Zones," which are
compact, pristine cities devoid of pollution and with sturdy barriers. Every Safe Zone has
ideal mechanisms in place to produce food, recycle water, and provide housing for all.
You now reside in one of these zones after forty years. Life is calm. Everybody has access to
food, shelter, medical care, and education. Students are assessed at age 12 to determine their
career preferences. Others choose to work in agriculture, medical, or transportation. It's all
planned.
The outer world is portrayed to you as a radioactive wasteland devoid of vegetation. Nobody
is allowed outside. Nobody is able to travel. "This is the only way to save humanity and
protect the world," you are informed.

The Safe Zone

Myth: An Unfree Future

Section 1: OVERVIEW OF THE SAFE ZONE LIE

A worldwide nuclear emergency was declared in 2094. The globe had grown too unsafe, according to the world government. People were moved into "Safe Zones," which are compact, pristine cities devoid of pollution and with sturdy barriers. Every Safe Zone has ideal mechanisms in place to produce food, recycle water, and provide housing for all. You now reside in one of these zones after forty years. Life is calm. Everybody has access to food, shelter, medical care, and education. Students are assessed at age 12 to determine their career preferences. Others choose to work in agriculture, medical, or transportation. It's all planned. The outer world is portrayed to you as a radioactive wasteland devoid of vegetation. Nobody is allowed outside. Nobody is able to travel. "This is the only way to save humanity and protect the world," you are informed.

However, you come across a note one evening while fixing an outdated computer in class. It displays a real-time video of rivers, forests, and even vibrant cities. The sky is blue. People smile as they stroll outside. "You have been deceived," reads a message on the screen. Danger was not the reason behind the creation of the Safe Zones. They were made to defend the earth—from people. The authorities thought that if people were free, they would once more ruin the planet. So, in order to manage behavior, they created a falsehood. You now have to decide whether to seek the truth or adhere to the system.

Section 2: QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

  1. Is it appropriate to regulate individuals in order to safeguard the environment?
  2. Do you believe that freedom is less vital than peace?
  3. Would mankind ruin the Earth once more if they had complete freedom?
  4. If safety is the main objective, is it acceptable for the government to tell lies?
  5. Do you think living in a safe zone would be desirable? Why not?

Section 3: HOW WOULD YOU ACT?

The reality has come to you: the outer world is still alive. You are among the select few who have viewed the video. Three options are available to you: A. Ignore what you saw and report the message. B. Don't tell anyone and carry on with your life as usual. C. Look for a way to leave the Safe Zone. Afterward, what happens? If you select option A (Report it), you will receive a better job assignment as compensation. The message is permanently erased.

  • ➔ However, you never stop wondering what life may have been like outside. If you select option B (do nothing), you maintain your regular life. You feel both safe and confined.
