Chapter Three Question
2. Piaget's definition of intelligence is "adaptation." Others consider a good memory or an
extensive vocabulary to be a sign of intelligence. How would you define intelligence? Give
examples.
Intelligence can fall both under “adoption “ and good memory and extensive vocabulary.
For my comprehension, I see intelligence as cognitive skills, such as fine memory,
communication and language skills and actions. As I read in chapter 3, infants begin showing
many skills in which they communicate and thought process. . Infants display behaviors that
indicate that they’re brain is thinking and recognizing their environment around them. Two ideas
that truly show an infant's level of being smart are when you show them an object, hide it, and
they show the skill of their brain wondering where did that object go? I believe it exhibits their
infants' level of going beyond what they can’t see. Since the baby can’t visually see that object
anymore, their brain goes deeper into investigating and wonderance of where the object went.
Another concept that displays a beyond level of thinking is the action of doing puzzles or
complex instructions. If you have several boxes categorized into shapes and colors and the child
properly understands where things fit, then that shows strong intelligence. Organization,
structure, technique, and methods highlight an infant's thought process. All in all, when infants
go beyond the surface level of thinking, that highlights intelligence. When Piagets’s uses
adaptation as intelligence in acclimating into one’s environment, yes it can show intelligence.
