What is Communication?

  • The term communication is derived from the Latin word “Communicare” which means to share.
  • The process of using messages to generate meaning Pearson, et al.,(2011).
  • The transmission of a message from a source to a receiver (Baran, 2011).
  • Process of sending and receiving messages through spoken or written words.
  • (^) Systematic process in which people interact with or through symbols to create and interpret meaning.

Most Common Types of Communication

Most Common Types of CommunicationNon-Verbal Communication - the others observe you and try to confer a meaning to it.  Verbal Communication -you speak your subject matter, and others listen to it carefully and try to associate meaning with it. 

Written Communication - you write your message

and others read it to derive meaning out of it.

Communication Process

  • Receiver: The person for whom the message is intended. He tries to comprehend it in the best possible manner such that the communication objective is attained.
  • Decoding: The receiver interprets the sender’s message and tries to understand it in the best possible manner.
  • Feedback: The final step of the process that ensures the receiver has received the message and interpreted it correctly.

Activity:

  • Through a slogan, state how the knowledge of the communication process aids people in communicating effectively.

Principles of Communication

  • Clear- The message should be clear and easily understandable to the recipient. The message should emphasize on a single goal at a time and shall not cover several ideas in a single sentence.
  • Correct- Correct language should be used, no grammatical and spelling mistakes, exact, and accurate message.
  • Complete- It must include all the relevant information as required by the intended audience.

Principles of Communication

  • Concrete- All the facts and figures should be clearly

mentioned in a message. There must be no room for

misinterpretation.

  • Concise- The message should be precise and to the

point. Avoid the lengthy sentences.

  • Consideration- The sender must be considerate
  • Courteous- The sender must take into consideration

both the feelings and viewpoints of the receiver.

ETHICS IN COMMUNICATION

  • Effective communication is ethical communication. Communication is ethical only when it is genuine, open, cooperative and sensitive to one’s cultural and social beliefs and practices. - Ethical communication enhances human worth and respect for self and others. - Proves the purpose of communication. - Shape the ethical communication

  • Respectful of their audience
    • (^) It is a way of showing regard and consideration for others and their ideas even if you do not agree with others.
  • Considerate of the Consequences of their Communication
    • Think before you communicate because the way you communicate can build or ruin your reputation.
  • Respect Truth
    • To fully realize the end purpose of communication, thoughts, ideas, and feelings should be expressed with the best intentions.
