Difficulties in Learning English Phonetics and Phonology - Prof. Lee, Summaries of English Language

This research investigates the common difficulties that third-year english-majored students at tay nguyen university face when learning english phonetics and phonology. The findings of this study can serve as a valuable reference for both students and teachers to improve the teaching and learning of english phonetics and phonology.

Abstract:
when the researcher looks at the students' result after studying this course, it makes
me surprised by the bad study results. The researcher realizes that a lot of students don't even
know what they should do to make their studying in this subject to be improved.
Unfortunately, the researcher recognizes that there is no study on the difficulties when
studying English Phonetics and Phonology
That is one of the reasons why the researcher wanted to do a research to find out the
common difficulties in learning English Phonetics and Phonology and find some solutions for
students to overcome these difficulties. This research will help students know more about the
difficulties in learning English Phonetics and Phonology.
Hopefully, the solutions compiled during the research process will help students get
excited in learning and achieving better results.

1.1: Opening:
Nowadays, because of the development of information technology, English has
become an international language that people use the most in all over the world. This is the
main reason why the number of people that study English is increasing day by day. The
English learners all over the world not only want to master the knowledge to take the exam
but also want to develop their communication ability. Since English is spoken in so many
different countries, there are lots of schools and universities around the world that offer
program in English.
In Vietnam, English is one of the compulsory subjects in the educational system.
Vietnamese people want to be a good English learner have to study English in many different
ways. However, If Students want to improve their English better, the essential things need to
do is mastering all 4 skills including: Speaking, listening, writing, and speaking. All of this
skill must be focused equally in any studying purposes, but for some English learner, the most
important thing students need at even the beginning or in upper Intermediate level is speaking.
Understanding that, faculty of foreign languages studies at Tay Nguyen University decided to
design an extensive course to improve the students' pronunciation namely "English Phonetics

Significance of the study By understanding students' difficulties in learning English Phonetics and Phonology and some remedies, it is hoped that the results of the study can be used as a reference to help both students and teachers in learning and teaching this subject better. Moreover, it is hoped that this study will contribute to the knowledge of TNU students' difficulties in learning English Phonetics and Phonology. 1.3. Objectives of the study This study is aimed:

  • To find out the difficulties that students faced when learning English Phonetics and Phonology.
  • To provide some solutions for students to improve the effectiveness of learning English Phonetics and Phonology. 2.1. Subjects of the study The subjects of this study are 60 third- year English- majored students in the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Tay Nguyen University. They are students of Foreign Language K2021 classes. 2.2. Scope of the study This research mainly focuses on the difficulties in learning English Phonetics and Phonology that lead to the student’s bad study results. Then this study will also offer some solutions for students to overcome those difficulties and improve their study results.

Finding out some solutions to help student overcome these difficulties.
  • Practice Pronunciation Regularly: Regular practice is essential for improving pronunciation skills. Students can practice by listening to native speakers, repeating words and phrases, and recording themselves to identify areas for improvement.
  • Use Phonetics Apps and Resources: There are many phonetics apps and online resources available that provide interactive exercises, audio samples, and visual aids to help students learn and practice phonetic sounds and symbols.
  • Focus on Minimal Pairs: Minimal pairs are pairs of words that differ by only one sound, such as "cat" and "cut." By focusing on minimal pairs, students can learn to distinguish between similar sounds and improve their pronunciation accuracy.
  • Learn Phonetic Symbols: Familiarizing oneself with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols can help students understand the pronunciation of words more accurately. They can use IPA charts and dictionaries to look up the pronunciation of unfamiliar words.
  • Practice Stress and Intonation Patterns: Stress and intonation play a crucial role in English pronunciation. Students can practice identifying and producing stress patterns in words and sentences, as well as practicing intonation patterns to convey meaning and emotion.
  • Seek Feedback: Students should seek feedback from teachers, classmates, or language partners to identify pronunciation errors and areas for improvement. Constructive feedback can help students correct mistakes and refine their pronunciation skills.
  • Engage in Conversational Practice: Engaging in conversational practice with native speakers or language partners can provide valuable opportunities to practice pronunciation in a real-life context. Students can focus on speaking clearly and accurately while communicating with others.
  • Listen to English Audio: Listening to English audio materials, such as podcasts, audiobooks, and news broadcasts, can help students improve their listening comprehension and pronunciation skills. Paying attention to pronunciation patterns and imitating native speakers can be beneficial.
  • Break Down Words into Phonemes: Breaking down words into individual phonemes can help students understand the pronunciation of complex words. They can practice segmenting words into phonemes and blending them back together to pronounce the word correctly.

Conclusion In conclusion, mastering English phonetics and phonology is a significant challenge for language learners due to the diverse range of sounds, stress patterns, and pronunciation variations present in the language. Learners often encounter difficulties with pronunciation, stress and intonation, phonetic symbols, minimal pairs, silent letters, regional accents, and connected speech processes. Overcoming these challenges requires dedicated practice, exposure to authentic English input, constructive feedback, and persistence. By actively engaging in pronunciation practice, utilizing resources effectively, seeking feedback, and maintaining motivation, learners can gradually improve their pronunciation skills and develop a better understanding of English phonetics and phonology. While the journey to mastery may be challenging, the rewards of clear communication and enhanced language proficiency make it a worthwhile endeavor for language learners.
