SOCRATES’ CONCEPT OF THE SELF
Socrates
- An ancient Greek philosopher who
believed that people should live virtuous
lives.
- Father of Western Philosophy
- Socrates believed humans have both a
physical body and an immortal soul.
Immortal Soul
- Survives beyond the death of the body.
Reality is dualistic, a dichotomous realm:
oThe physical world is changeable,
imperfect, and transient.
oThe ideal realm is unchanging,
eternal, and immortal.

  • The body belongs to the physical realm (subject to decay and death).
  • The soul belongs to the ideal realm, striving for wisdom and perfection.
  • Reason is the soul's tool for achieving wisdom but is hindered by the imperfections of the physical body.
  • Reason enables the soul to transcend the physical realm and connect with the unchanging.
  • Socrates argued that the soul is eternal and cannot be destroyed, so death should not be feared.
  • Life on earth is an imperfect reflection of the ultimate, eternal reality, and our goal is to unite with this higher reality. 2 | P a t
