NURSING SHORTAGES
INTRODUCTION:
Nursing is the science that deals with professional care of the sick and injured, as well
as other clinical and health-care responsibilities. It also deals with health promotion and
sickness prevention. Nursing is a part of the so- called health science group, which includes
nursing practitioners that operate with a degree of autonomy and independence while still
working as a part of a multidisciplinary team (GM Martinez,2021). Nurses are a critical or
major part of health-care and make-up the comprehensive section of the health profession.
Nurses have an important role in providing direct care to the patient. Therefore,
nurses are designed on decisive pillar in any health system. However; most recent years, the
shortage of nursing staff has become a serious concern in most countries (Hosseini,2007).
According to Haddad (2022), it is estimates that there will be an increase of 2,75,000 nurses
by 2030 and the demand for health services is increasing as the population ages.
The nurse shortage is one of the reasons that the profession faces in general. Nurses provide
the patient care that is a product of hospital supply; as a result, if hospitals care about their
customer’s satisfaction, they must figure out how to keep a sufficient number of nurses on
staff (Mirn. A. Fawas,2018). The effectiveness of patient care depends on the availability of
more nurses to improve health-care and health outcomes. The following details analyses the
issues of nursing shortages.

Nurses are a critical or major part of health-care and make-up the comprehensive section of the health profession. Nurses have an important role in providing direct care to the patient. Therefore, nurses are designed on decisive pillar in any health system. However; most recent years, the shortage of nursing staff has become a serious concern in most countries (Hosseini,2007). According to Haddad (2022), it is estimates that there will be an increase of 2,75,000 nurses by 2030 and the demand for health services is increasing as the population ages. The nurse shortage is one of the reasons that the profession faces in general. Nurses provide the patient care that is a product of hospital supply; as a result, if hospitals care about their customer’s satisfaction, they must figure out how to keep a sufficient number of nurses on staff (Mirn. A. Fawas,2018). The effectiveness of patient care depends on the availability of more nurses to improve health-care and health outcomes. The following details analyses the issues of nursing shortages.

REASONS FOR NURSING SHORTAGES:

The nursing profession continues to face shortage due to lack of inadequate

nursing education associated with financial issues and academic shortcomings

(Haddad, 2022). A rise in the average age of registered nurses, lower school

enrollment, expanded professional option for women, changes in the healthcare

delivery system, nurse’s burnout and the public misperception of the professions are

the factors contributing to the nursing shortage (Murray, M Kettering,2020). There are

several potential reasons for nursing shortage, aging population, aging workforce,

career and family, nurse’s burnout, stress, growth of population and violence in the

healthcare setting (Haddad,2022).

EFFECTS OF NURSING SHORTAGES

Attitude influence the quantity and quality of work produced, as well as other factors such as absenteeism, a liability to leave the authority and high turnover rates, to name a few Satisfaction The majority of studies in the field of heath care have focused on analyzing and evaluating job satisfaction and its components. Nurses have a little lower level of satisfaction; nurses demand high dedication in their work. lack of satisfaction leads to physical and mental fatigue, work stress, work place fatigue, health problems and family discord(chung,2020). Nurses face burnout and mental stress due to unhappiness at hospital and besides the high patient -to-nurse ratios resulting in failure-to-rescue and a higher mortality rate M

fatigue and high stress environment, leaving them weary and there is a high possibility of injury at the end of the day (Son, 2019) Economic Crises: Nurses shortage is directly affecting the financial stability of the hospitals. Due to the lack of nurses, hospitals are forces to close many beds which affects the revenue of the hospital. Lack of revenue can impact financial crisis which is a major problem that can lead to closing down of the hospitals (Avent healthcare professional,2021). Due to staff shortage, the existing nurses are demanding salary increase, bonuses and other benefits which also affects the hospitals financially. Waiting Time: Longer waiting times is another part of nursing shortage. Due to lack of proper nursing staff, waiting time increase and re-admissions due to disease related numbers. It also affected the quality of care of patient requiring urgent care due to increased waiting time (Avant Healthcare professional,2021). Remedies for nursing shortage: The global nursing shortage is demand on health-care system. One solution to the nursing shortage is to increase the number of student nurses; capability building of student M

nurses has a positive impact on patient safety (Graham,2020). Provide increase salary and benefits, ensure safe working environment, improving public perception of nursing. These help to improve the retention of existing nurses (Aziz Shamsi ,2020). These are few options that healthcare facilities alleviate the nursing shortage, though it will be a protected process. Providing nursing program and universities with proper student trainings, using the technologies and equipment as per the latest updation and collaborating the nurses with international nurses are some of the options (Brody.A,2022). Advantages of increased staffing: Increased nurse-to-patient ratio correlate with improved patient outcomes (Ramsay,2018). Adequate staffing can lead to a decrease in hospital-acquired infections, decreased risk of admission stay, falls and patient injuries. Increased staffing burnout and turnover lead to higher quality care. Properly staffed hospitals can lead to increased financial benefits to the hospitals; as a greater number of patients can be taken care of (Damian Everhart,2015)

CONCLUSION:

Nurses need a proper development of appropriate skills to the healthcare system and the community. The nursing shortage has been a global issue which needs to be addressed and reversed. The nursing students at various institutes must be given proper information about the benefits of this profession and they must be encouraged to study further so that they can be educative tutors. To avoid the existing nursing shortage, it is necessary to increase the salaries, improve the work environment, give better training and knowledge about M
