- Was the change planned or unplanned? Initially, the change within the workplace due to Covid 19 was not planned. After the first few cases and Covid began to rise even more on my unit at the hospital, a plan was made and put into action. I often asked myself how can plan for something you never heard of or know anything about? - List the elements that made this change difficult. The elements that made change difficult is the lack of personal protective equipment needed for each staff member, the lack of staff members who called in sick, the staff members who refused to come in because they were afraid of catching a deadly disease, lack of insurance for patients and not being able to care for their immediate needs. - Who were the people involved, and what were their attitudes toward the change? The people involved were all staff members, nurse manager, directors of nursing, chiefs, environmental services, infection control, etcetera. Honestly, of course none of the workers were happy about the changes that occurred, more so due to Covid. Most of them continue working hard in doing their jobs to prevent the spread of Covid 19. Some staff members did not take the deadly disease as serious than others. Due to the proper steps taken for protection against patients and staff the patient outcome had become better. - What were some lessons learned by you during this change process? Throughout 7 years of me being a nurse and nurse leader I have humbly learned a lot. Our front-line caregivers are our greatest source for what works and what does not with many life lessons to be learned as we go. As health care leaders, we can agree that some of the most difficult situations are the ones in which we learn how to improve our policies and procedures. Those can be painful, but if we are open to it, we can listen and learn how to do things better and even learn something about ourselves as leaders. Overall, I learned it is not all about who is right but what is right. We had nurses who were infection prevention experts advising physicians and administrators, and in some cases, regulatory agencies advising about preventing infections.
