SECTION A (GS) (answer at least one)

  1. Explain how the resting membrane potential of a neuron is generated and maintained. Also consider what would happen, if a. the K + concentration outside the cells was raised artificially b. K+^ channels were blocked pharmacologically c. the ATP stores of the cell were depleted experimentally.
  2. Compare and contrast the development, anatomical structure and function of at least one chemosensory organ with at least one mechanosensory organ.
  3. The connectivity of the nervous system is crucial for its proper function. Explain how connections between neurons are established during development and which mechanisms ensure the specificity of neuronal connections. Give examples. SECTION B (UF) (answer at least one)
  4. The product of gene P specifies the posterior pole in an animal by inhibiting translation of gene A , which functions in specifying the anterior pole. Assuming that genes P and A have no other function in the development of this animal, what would you expect to happen if (1) gene P is ectopically expressed in the anterior pole; (2) gene P is ectopically expressed in the anterior pole, but protein A is injected into the prospective anterior pole; (3) gene P is knocked out? Explain why.
  5. The protein -catenin is localized to the nuclei of cells in the prospective dorsal side of the Xenopus embryo, but to the membranes of cells in the prospective ventral side. mRNA of -catenin is ubiquitous. Describe the events that lead to the subcellular difference in -catenin protein localization and explain what -catenin’s role is in nuclei of dorsal cells.
  6. How is the germ line specified in Caenorhabditis elegans? SECTION C (WA) (answer at least one)
  7. Discuss the concept of a developmental reaction norm (a) in general and (b) in a specific case-study of a named animal.
  8. Discuss the evolution and development of animal eyes, with a particular focus on the difference between homology and convergence at both genetic and morphological levels.
