B. ANALYSIS (17 Minutes) "The Hidden Truth" Directions : The class will be given a task to discuss the following guidelines. They will later find out what their assigned task is to discuss when they receive the envelope. The class will be given five (5) minutes to discuss within their group and three (3) minutes to share their discussion with the entire class. widespread a term is, the more users will benefit. Stay away from jargon in which highly technical terms will most likely require a user to look up many terms in the definition just to understand what it says although there are cases that involve the use of a technical term in a specialized field that it should be minimal. Examples: CORRECT: Acidity is the state of having acid excessively. INCORRECT: Acidity is the state of having extreme vitriolic base.

  1. Avoid circularity- it is not good to define a word with that same word in the definition instead use different terms. Avoid defining a term solely using etymologically or morphologically related terms. Adverbs are especially prone to being defined by the adjective from which they derive. Examples: CORRECT: Putrid is being in a state of rotten. INCORRECT: Putrid is being in a state of rotten, decayed, foul and being putrid all throughout.
  2. Make it simple- write with simple grammatical structures rather than complex ones and place key terms and short explanations near the start of the definition. Examples: CORRECT: A storification is a process of adding narrative to a certain topic. INCORRECT: A storification is a process of adding narrative to a certain topic; transforming some facts into a story that helps the reader comprehend the passage that needs to be synthesized later on.
  3. A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb and may also have an object and modifiers. However, it contains only one independent clause. Every sentence requires a subject and a predicate. In the Subject Predicate verb Direct object Indirect object Object complement Subject complement
  4. The girl left the door open.
  5. He is a good singer.
  6. She ate a hotdog. 4.Anna gave an apple to her mother.

grammar world, this is called subject- verb agreement. Subjects and verbs must agree with one another (singular or plural). Thus, if the subject is singular, its verb must also be singular; if the subject is plural, its verb must also be plural. So as with writing basic definitions observing correct grammatical structure, it requires skills and practice. (After 5 minutes) (The Teacher will give an additional information) Learner representative is now presenting their assigned task. C. ABSTRACTION ( 5 Minutes) Activity 2: Guilty or Not Guilty! Directions : In this activity, some sentences violate the rules set out in the Basic Guidelines for Writing a Definition. Identify the sentence whether it follows the basic guidelines in writing a definition or not by raising guilty if it is incorrect or not guilty if it is correct.

  2. Ballpen is a tool that uses a small ball to write ink on paper. (Not guilty)
  3. Crayons are colored drawing tools, made of wax, which are used for coloring and drawing with crayons. (Guilty) -Does not follow the Guidelines 4 Avoid Circularity.

  1. Student a person who learns, usually in a school or educational setting. (Not guilty)
  2. Student is an individual engaged in the process of academic instruction at a formal educational establishment. (Guilty) -Violates Guidelines 2 Avoid complicated term -The incorrect definition uses more complicated terms like "individual" and "engaged in the process of academic instruction," which are unnecessarily technical and less clear compared to the simpler, more direct definition in the correct example.
  3. Teacher is an individual who educates and instructs students in various subjects, guiding them through the learning process and helping them develop the skills necessary to succeed in both academic and personal aspects of life. (Guilty) -Violates guidelines 5 Make it simple
