Exploring the Mid-Tudor Crisis through the Tower of London: A Symbol of Fear and Power, Lecture notes of Religion

In this 90-minute session, students will analyze the tower of london's buildings and documentary evidence to understand its role as a symbol of fear and power during the mid-tudor period. Through prisoners' marks on the tower walls, students will evaluate the political landscape of this turbulent era. This session complements various exam boards, including those from aqa, edexcel, ocr, and wjec.

Meeting Point: Entrance to Learning Centre
Succession for the taking? The Mid-Tudor period saw the stability of the monarchy
and its future legacies thrown into question. In this session, students will analyse the
Tower of London’s buildings, together with documentary evidence, to explore the
Tower’s use by Tudor kings and queens as a symbol of fear and power during this
turbulent period.
Through the prisoners who have left their marks on the walls of the Tower itself,
students will consider how the Tower of London can be used to evaluate the Mid-
Tudor period and its fluctuating political landscape.

During your session : Please note that the 1:1 5 staff to student ratio which we ask for throughout your visit still applies during your learning session. We ask that sufficient adults remain with the group as they will be encouraged to join in with the session activities. For health and safety reasons, our sessions are for a maximum of 35 students. The session your group has booked with us takes place in one of our learning spaces and on the visitor route at the Tower of London. Please meet your workshop presenter at the entrance to the Learning Centre. This is marked on the map below.

  • Go to the back of the Jewel House, walking past the Fusiliers Museum.
  • Continue past the visitor toilets until you come across a chain with a sign ‘No entry except for booked school groups’.
  • Pass beyond the chain, and the entrance to the Leaning Centre will be on your left.
