INTERSUBJECTIVITY

‘The people do not complain

because they have no voice; do

not move because they are

lethargic, and you say that they

do not suffer because you have

not seen their hearts bleed.”

  • Author: Jose Rizal

What is intersubjectivity? What is intersubjectivity?

Intersubjectivity, in philosophy, psychology, sociology, and anthropology, is the psychological relation between people. It is usually used in contrast to solipsistic individual experience, emphasizing the inherent sociality of humans. Intersubjectivity generally means something that is shared between two minds. A basic example of intersubjectivity is having a shared, common agreement in defining an object. So most people would experience intersubjectivity when asked to picture an apple- the definition of an apple would be the same.

Most of the time, we look at our

difference and may have “ labels ” toward

another one. You can be “misfit”, a

“loner”, a “partygoer” or “easy-go-lucky”.

In our lives, somehow, we have collected

and given labels. Ourselves towards

others.

Though we are part of our society, we are still different individuals living in this society. Labels could be negative or limiting. You be called “impatient”, “whiny”, or “stubborn”. may Nevertheless, we could go beyond the labels, for as emphasized in this book, as humans, we are holistic. As humans, we are to be regarded in our totality.

The I-You relation is simply the interpersonal relationship with other human person. The we-Relation is the communal relationship towards a common good. Wojtyla calls a community that is authentically participating and acting with one another by the virtue of common good awe.
