History is the study of the human past, with special attention to the written record. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine and analyses the sequence of events, and it often attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Historians debate the nature of history and its usefulness.

History is the analysis and interpretation of the human past enabling us to study continuity and changes that are taking place over time. It is an act of both investigation and imagination that seeks to explain how people have changed over time. Historians use all forms of evidence to examine, interpret, revisit, and reinterpret the past. These include not just written documents, but also oral communication and objects such as buildings, artifacts, photographs, and paintings.
History has been defined by different scholars in different ways. At this juncture, it will be advisable to refer to some of the definitions of history given by some of eminent scholars. Henry Johnson says, “History in its broadest sense is everything that ever happened”
Rabindra Nath Tagore says , “There is only one History - the History of Man” E.H.Carr says , “History is a continuous process of interaction between the historian and his facts. It is an unending dialogue between the present and the past ” Jawaharlal Nehru observed that man’s growth from barbarism to civilization is supposed to be the theme of history."
Smith,V.S: “The value and interest of history depend largely on the degree in which the present is illuminated by the past.”
NCERT: “History is the scientific study of past happenings in all their aspects, in the life of a social group, in the light of present happenings.”
The above definitions explain History as a significant records of events of the past, a meaningful story of mankind depicting the details of what happened to man and why it happened. Mainly it deals with the human world.
