AN ARTICLE REVIEW ABOUT THE POLITICS OF GOLDEN RICE
Adrian Dubock
Golden Rice is a genetically modified and bio fortified crop. The
bio fortification increases the natural value in crops. Golden rice in
order to produce beta carotene which is not always and not usually
produce in rice. This Golden Rice was first introduced in the year
1999, when Potrykus and Peter Beyer both professors proposed
their project to Rockefeller Foundation, their goal is to provide a
sustainable bio fortification approach to combat Vitamin A
deficiencies in developing countries.
A deficiency (VAD) is prevalent in developing countries whose
diet are all dependent on the rice that they eat or other
carbohydrate foods, which do not contain even a piece of Vitamin A.
The prototype Golden Rice contained 3 genes of interest introduced
from other organisms, but was reduced to 2 and then the plant
source of one of the carotenoids and also a proportion of the most
important part the carotenoid for Vitamin A synthesize by the
human body, beta-carotene.
The benefits of Golden Rice has the promise to help people
prevent million of deaths an to alleviate sufferings of children in
many countries also the adults afflicted with VAD and micro nutrient
deficiency malnutrition in developing countries around the world.
Golden Rice may open up more possibilities of enhancing
genetically modified, bio fortified crops to combat benefit golden
rice. Supporters of the project believe that the improvement of
public health in developing countries trumps the risks associated
with golden rice.

the numerous debate dominated by the anti-GMO activists and Nobel Laureates, some of the views are left in the dark. There’s unheard voices of the inhabitants of the developing countries, the intended receivers and the target of the proposed resolutions fight against micronutrient malnutrition. But with the support of anti-GMO activists and pro-GmO activists, the voices from the developing countries are starting to emerge. Many anti-GMO activists actively voice out the potential negative consequences and effects of planting and consuming golden rice. They said that there will be potential allergies or antibiotic resistance, also the possibility that genetically modifies foods enter the food supply inadvertently from planting GMO crops near the non GMO crops without any knowledge from the consumer. The proposed planting of Golden Rice consists of many potential problems in the future not just only in the crops that they plant but also this could negatively affect the poor farmers who cannot compete with large biotech companies for land and a share of the rice market. All in all, Golden Rice do have benefits for the developing countries but also it has to take risks and consequences that will negatively affect not just the crops but the people from developing countries. Golden Rice is a long-term issue and it has numerous debate to tackle and dig deeper for more information and data regarding its use in many countries. It has to be more specific and beneficial, and let the unheard voices be heard to completely understand both sides of the intended receivers and the people behind the proposal of Golden Rice.
