Adjectives

about nouns

and pronouns

Adjective phrase consists of

  • a single adjective: tall in Sally is tall
  • an adjective headword and a qualifies: very tall
  • more elaborate: Sally is even taller than the woman who coaches her volleyball team.

Other examples

  • Humans can be fairly ridiculous animals.
  • Tina lost her dark brown briefcase.
  • Mr. Sweet was a tall, thinnish man with thick kinky hair going dead white. He was dark brown , his eyes were very squinty and sort of bluish , and he chewed Brown Mule tobacco

Adverb

  • An adverb is a descriptive word that tells more about a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
  • Adverbs tell how, where and when: “Yesterday, she ran quickly downtown.”
  • The most commonly used adverb in English is “very.”
  • Many adverbs end in “ly”: quickly, carefully, & slowly…

Adverbial Phrase

  • An adverb or adverbial phrase is a word group with an adverb as its head.
  • This adverb may be accompanied by modifiers or qualifiers.
  • An adverb phrase can modify a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or even an entire sentence or main clause.
