The Hero’s First Teacher
Dona Teodora
The first teacher of Rizal. She is a remarkable woman of good character and fine culture.
At the age of three, Rizal learned the alphabet and prayers.
As a tutor, she was patient, conscientious and understanding.
She was the first who discovered that Rizal has a talent in poetry. She encouraged Rizal to write
poems.
In memorizing the ABC’s and stimulating her son’s imagination, she related many stories.
Maestro Celestino
First private tutor of Rizal that gave him lessons at home.
Maestro Lucas Padua
Second tutor of Rizal.
Leon Monroy
Former classmate of Rizal’s father who became his tutor. This old teacher lived at the Rizal home
and instructed Jose in Spanish and Latin. He did not live long. He died five months later.
After Monroy’s death, the hero’s parents decided to send their gifted son to a private school in
Biǹan.
Jose goes to Biǹan
June 1869 – Rizal left Calamba for Biǹan.
Paciano – accompanied Rizal going to Binan and acted as Rizal’s second father.
Carromata this is the transportation they used in reaching the destination after one and half
hour’s drive.
They proceed to their aunt’s house, when Rizal was to lodge.
Leandro – cousin of Rizal; went seeing in the town with Rizal.
Instead of enjoying, Jose became depressed because of home sickness
First Day in Biñan School
Maestro Justiniano Cruz – the owner of school where Rizal is going to study.
The school was a small nipa hut about 30 meters from the home of Jose’s aunt.
Paciano introduced Rizal to the teacher, after which he departed to return to Calamba.
Jose was assigned in his seat in the class. And the teacher asked him if he knows Spanish and
Latin. He answered “A little sir.”
Pedro – the son of Maestro Justiniano who laughed at Rizal.
Jose described his teacher in Binan as follows:
He was a tall, thin, long necked,
With a sharp nose and a body slightly bent forwarded
He used to wear a sinamay shirt woven by the skilled hands of women of Batangas.
First School Brawl
In the afternoon if his first day in school, when the teacher was having his siesta, Jose met the bully,
Pedro. He was angry at this bully for making fun of him during his conversation with the teacher in
the morning.

 Jose challenged Pedro to a fight. The latter readily accepted, thinking that he could easily beat the Calamba boy who was smaller and younger.  The two boys wrestled furiously in the classroom, much to the glee of their classmate. Jose learned the art of wrestling from this athletic Tio Manuel. Rizal defeated the bigger boy. Andres Salandanan – challenged him to an arm-wrestling match after the class in the afternoon. Jose was defeated by Andres.  In succeeding days, he had other fights with the boys of Binan. Painting Lessons in Binan Juancho – old painter. The Father-in-Law of the school teacher.  Jose lured by love for painting, spent many leisure hours at the painter’s house.  Old Juancho freely gave him lessons in drawing and painting. He was impressed by the artistic talent of the Calamba lad. Jose Guevarra – classmate of Rizal and also loved painting. They become apprentices of the old painter.  They became “the favorite painters of the class.” Daily Life in Binan  Jose led a methodological life in Binan, almost Spartan in simplicity. Such a life contributed much to his future development. It strengthened his body and soul. Best Student in School  In academic studies, Jose beat all Biñan boys. He surpassed all in Spanish, Latin and other subjects.  Some of his older classmates were jealous of his intellectual superiority. They wickedly squealed to the teacher whenever Jose had a fight outside the school, and even told lies to discredit him before the teacher’s eyes.  Consequently, the teacher has to punish Jose. Thus Rizal said that “in spite of the reputation I had of being a good boy, the day was unusual when I was not laid out on a bench and given five or six blows.” End of Biñan Schooling  Before the Christmas season in 1870, Jose received a letter from his sister Saturnina, informing him of the arrival of the steamer Talim which would take him from Binan to Calamba.  December 17, 1870 – Rizal left Binan after one year and half of schooling in Binan.  Arturo Campos – friend of his father, who too care to Jose. Martyrdom of Gom-Bur-ZaJanuary 20, 1872 – about 200 Filipino soldiers and workmen of the Cavite arsenal under the leadership of Lamadrid, Filipino sergeant, rose in violent mutiny because of the abolition of their usuaul privileges, including exemption from tribute and polo (forced labor) by the reactionary GOVERNOR RAFAEL DE IZQUIERDO.  Father Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora- leaders of the secular movement to Filipinize the Philippine parishes.  Jose Ma. Basa, Attorneys Joaquin Pardo de Tavera and Antonio Ma regidor- supporters of Gom- Bur-Za.  February 17, 1872 – It is when the archbishop plea for clemency because of their innocence by order of the Governor General Izquierdo.  Their martyrdom was deeply mourned by the Rizal family and many other patriotic families in the Philippines.  Paciano, enraged by the execution of Burgos, his beloved friend, teacher and housemate, quit his studies at the College of San Jose and returned to Calamba, where he told the heroic story of Burgos to his younger brother Jose, who was then nearly eleven years old.  The martyrdom of Gom-Bur-Za in 1872 truly inspired Rizal to fight the evils of Spanish tyranny and redeems his oppressed people.  April 18, 1889 – he wrote a letter to Mariano Ponce in Paris.
