About Dilmah Dilmah is unique; a brand that is founded on a passionate commitment to quality and authenticity in tea, it is also a part of a philosophy that goes beyond commerce in seeing business as a matter of human service. Tea is Nature’s gift to mankind. A beverage that heals, protects and refreshes, it is also infinite in variety, changing subtlety with the natural alchemy of sunshine, soils, wind, rain and temperature. That beautiful variety in tea is as much a challenge as a deliciously indulgent reward for whilst nature gives us a tea to suit every mood, and desire, she demands expertise in understanding and selecting the finest. That expertise can only come from passionate commitment to tea. Founder of Dilmah, Merrill J. Fernando, declared his commitment to tea when in the 1950s he devoted his life to tea. Four decades later he was joined by his two sons, Dilhan and Malik (after whom he named his Dilmah Tea) who share his passion. Today, nearly sixty years on, Merrill and his sons – the Fernando family – have acquired the expertise to grow tea, pack and offer consumers around the world only the finest. Their love for tea clearly transcends generations for Dilhan and Malik’s sons and daughters are learning tea, preparing for a time when they assume responsibility for the covenant that Merrill made, when in the 1950s he declared that he would devote his life to bringing quality back to tea, ethically.
more than 100 countries. He championed garden freshness, authenticity, and variety in genuine Ceylon tea from a single origin in the face of a conservative post-colonial industry accustomed to cheap blends, dubious branding, and retaining profits deliciously. 150 years after the first tea plantation was established in Sri Lanka, one brand is sipped across the global. How Dilmah as become the world’s Biggest tea brand If you think a cup of tea is about dunking a tea bag into hot water and stirring in some milk and sugar, just don’t serve it to Merrill Fernando. “After you dip the tea bag in hot water, cover the cup with a saucer and leave it for three to five minutes so the aroma doesn’t escape. And remember, the best cup of tea is made without milk or sugar,” he says, in a tone that rules out all argument. Fernando, the founder-chairman of Sri Lanka’s best-known tea brand, Dilmah, knows what he is talking about. The flavour, intact in the cup in my hand, proves his point. This aroma has travelled by now to at least a hundred countries from star hotels in Sydney to restaurants in Moscow, tea bars in Budapest and an in-flight tray in West Asia. I meet 87-year-old Fernando at the Dilmah head office in Peliyagoda, a suburb of Colombo. He comes here at 8.30 sharp every morning. Wearing a full-sleeved shirt and grey trousers, his white hair gelled and combed back, he comes across as the classic old-school entrepreneur, whose story is one of passion, hard work and measured risks. His office is spacious and well-lit, but not swanky. There is an old- world charm about the big wooden tables and leather sofas. The books on the coffee table are all about — tea.
