SUICIDES IN MUMBAI

About suicide:

Suicide is a complex topic and it can be approached from many different angles. There can be varying views about this, depending on the mind-set as well as upbringing of the person. Suicide has been named as a leading cause of death among teenagers and adults under 35 years of age, and has been ranked among the top 13 causes of death for individuals of all ages worldwide by World Health Organization (WHO). Adolescence is a period during which depression, anxiety, alcohol and drug use show increase in prevalence and are all factors associated with increased risk of suicide. Exposure to suicides through the media, where they are often portrayed in dramatic terms has also contributed to these aggregate increases in adolescent suicide, perhaps because they are highly susceptible to imitative.

Suicides in Mumbai:

Every seventh suicide in the country last year (2019) took place in Maharashtra, which saw over 5% increase to 18,916 deaths from 17,972 in 2018. The number of suicides rose 4.7% in Mumbai, which is placed fourth among cities with 1,229 cases, according to NCRB’s 2019 report on ‘Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India’.

Category of suicides by profession & problems faced by them in Mumbai:

  1. Student Suicides: In Mumbai, suicide rates for youth aged 15 to 29, according to a 2012 Lancet report, which illustrated the need for urgent interventions. Students from “happy” families suffer from less depression, according to an October 2019 study conducted among Indian university students India has about 46,000 suicides occurring each in 15–29 and 30–44 age groups in 2012 – or about 34% each of all suicides, this concludes that at least one student dies every one hour which accounts for almost 28 deaths per day. On average, male suicide rate is twice that of females. Ragging:

Ragging has been identified as a trigger for suicides Cram Schools: Many suicides are attributed to the intense pressure and harsh regimen of the students in cram schools (or coaching institutes). These institutes offer coaching to high school students for various competitive exams, such as the JEE or NEET. Causes: Education is perhaps society’s most critical responsibility. Educational institutions impart knowledge to students, lay emphasis on their physical well-being and prepare them for social challenges. But unfortunately, many educational institutions and teachers are not yet fully equipped to understand the mental health issues of students. Psychological concerns in children are on the rise, especially behavioural issues and suicides. 12 per cent of Indian students between the age of 4 and

Children and young adults have complicated emotional eco-systems that are easily afflicted by behavioural, emotional, learning or mental disorders, including – depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, disruptive behaviour disorders, Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD. Depression and bi-polar disorder can be

policies, corruption in subsidies, crop failure, public mental health, personal issues and family problems. What are the problems faced by farmers in Maharashtra? The reasons for such a pathetic state of farmers include below average rainfall, heavy load- shedding, lack of small irrigation projects, poverty, pressure of private moneylenders and banks, ignorance of ancillary occupations for raising income, employment problem of the farmers ' children.

Main problems faced by farmers in Maharashtra:  Small and fragmented land-holdings.  Seeds.  Manures, Fertilizers and Biocides.  Irrigation.  Lack of mechanisation.  Soil erosion.  Agricultural Marketing.  Inadequate storage facilities

  1. Suicides over financial, family & other problems: In a grim indicator of high levels of stress in the financial city, the number of suicides committed in Mumbai rose 7.4% between 2018 and 2019, according to the National Crime Records Bureau’s data analysis for 2019. What makes the increase grimmer is the fact that the total number

Incidentally, suicides due to drug abuse or alcoholic addiction registered the sharpest rise of 41.7% from 3,670 in 2018 to 5,199 in 2019. In 2019, in Maharashtra, 1,546 people ended their lives due to bankruptcy, 676 due to marriage- related issues, 32 impotency and infertility, 150 due to death of a dear one, 1,365 due to drug abuse, 37 falls in social reputation, 57 ideological causes, 356 love affairs, 388 poverty, 403 unemployment, 90 property dispute, 41 illicit relationship, nine illegitimate pregnancy, seven physical abuse, 305 career problems, 645 reasons unknown and 1,772 for various reasons.

There is some reason for the suicides. They are:

physical activity can make a person’s mind and thoughts healthy.

7. Be happy and encourage the child a happy conversation with those small victories the child brings.

  1. Encourage him to spend time with friends and family or joining in any music, dance classes or joining in any voluntary free services which makes him busy with work and thus there is no time for bad thoughts. CONCLUSION: Detecting the early signs of suicidal tendency is important along with looking into the reason for committing suicide. Behavior of the victims must be monitored and accordingly early treatment or psychological counseling must be provided. Engage them in all tasks and make sure they are surrounded people and work. Any harsh situation must not be brought near the victims. The victim must be let free from all the stress and allow him to recover. The main role of the individuals is to never compare or criticize others (victims). Everyone is unique and equally talented, just understand the victims and nurture them in their field of joy rather than allotting them benchmarks and standards to achieve.

Another important role lies with teacher. The students(teenagers) spend most of their time in school/colleges and the main duty of the teacher is to observe and understand the students(teenagers) and counsel at the beginning before it rips. Psychological knowledge of the teacher, life skills classes must be helpful in nurturing the students(teenagers) and helping them to cope up with their emotions and making them emotionally and mentally strong to face every situation of life.
