Q1. An Environmental Impact Statement is to be prepared for a motorway project. The motorway will be approximately 120km in length, and cross a predominantly rural area.

(a) Describe the overall layout of the EIS to be submitted. (5 marks) (b) Describe how any impacts may be addressed in the EIS under the following headings: (i) Human Beings (4 marks) (ii) Fauna ( 4 marks) (iii) Water (4 marks) (iv) Air (4 marks) (v) Cultural Heritage. (4 marks) Describe the context, character, significance, sensitivity of each of the possible impacts and any possible mitigation measures that may be proposed for each.

Q2(a) What are the primary greenhouse gases, and what are the main sources of these gases? Describe how these greenhouse gas emissions affect global climate change. (7 marks)

Q2(b) Describe the primary carbon emissions from the construction sector. How can these emissions be reduced in the future? (10 marks)

Q2(c) The energy sector in Ireland is another major source of carbon emissions. Describe trends in emissions, energy use, and energy sources in the recent past, and how these trends may change to enable us to reach our emission targets in the Kyoto Protocol. (8 marks)

Q3(a) Describe methods that may be used to reduce the overall quantity of biodegradable municipal waste being disposed of to landfill? How do these methods fit in with the overall EU waste management hierarchy? (10 marks)

Q3(b) What are the environmental consequences of landfilling of biodegradable waste? (5 marks)
