Q1. (a) Draw a block diagram of an I/O bus network and describe FIVE advantages of I/O Bus networks [10 marks]

(b) Describe how distributed control is implemented in the Fieldbus network. [10 marks]

(c) Describe the factors that should be taken into account when designing a human-machine interface. [10 marks]

(d) Describe the architecture of a SCADA Interface. [10 marks]

(e) A production team has designed a system to automate an assembly operation. The associated hardware costs are as follows:

i. Pick and place robot €105,

ii. Vision system €7,

iii. Cameras €1,

iv. Associated hardware €7,

v. Fixtures €45,

It is estimated that maintenance will cost approximately €1,500 per month. Training will cost approximately €12,000.

The new system will free up FOUR employees at an average cost of €27,000 per employee.

Productivity and quality improvements should save €14,000 per year.

The team believe that the system will be used for THREE years.

Given that a payback period of 18 months or less is company policy, determine if the project should be undertaken. [10 marks]
