BLG 144 Case Study 2
Back to the Drawing Board: A Re-Investigation of Roryicus gilmorely
Your initial investigation of Stars Hollow Lake pointed to the idea that overfishing was
the cause of the decline in R. gilmorely fish. As you readied your procedure and
prepared to put it into action, you learn from some local townspeople that the fishing
marathon was actually banned over 10 years ago and hasn’t taken place since - how
did everyone fail to mention this! This action was taken in the hopes that the population
of R. gilmorely fish would begin to rise again, but this unfortunately wasn’t the case: the
fish population continued to steadily decline. Back to the drawing board for you.
You conduct further research on the surrounding habitat by testing the water and
discover the presence of a chemical called kryptonite. Upon further investigation, you
learn that this chemical was used at Stars Hollow Farm located not too far away from
Stars Hollow Lake. It somehow ended up in the lake over a decade ago. Upon further
research, you find out that this chemical is used as an insecticide.
Case Study 2 Questions (please answer in a separate document)
1. Based on the information provided, construct a new hypothesis to explain the
decline in R. gilmorely fish populations. Include only an alternate hypothesis (null
hypothesis not required). Provide one peer-reviewed journal reference to support
your hypothesis. (3 marks; maximum 50 words)
2. Design an experiment that would test your hypothesis and explain how you
would obtain your results. Be sure to address the key components of sound
experimental design. (6 marks; maximum 300 words)
3. Identify two limitations from the experiment you designed above. (2 marks;
maximum 125 words)
