I. NAME OF THE PROJECT:
BENCH VISE
II. OBJECTIVES:
1. To enhance students skills with the different lathe turning operations.
2. To enhance the students skills in milling operation.
3. To enhance students skill in surface grinding.
4. To fabricate a machinist bench vise that will be used in metalworking.
III. PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT:
1. This project will serve as the students output for their laboratory for preliminary
term.
2. Students will have a tool that they can use in different metalworking activities in
the shop.
IV. TECHNICAL TERMS:
1. Bench vise - is a type of workholding device use in different machining operations.
2. Workpiece – the piece of metal to be machined.
3. Facing operation - operation in which the cutting tool removes metal from the end of
the workpiece or a shoulder.
4. Straight turning operation - produces a cylindrical surface by removing excess metal
from the work piece.
5. Forming operation - is an operation that produces a convex, concave or any irregular
profile on the workpiece.
6. Threading operation - is the process of creating a screw thread.
7. Tapping operation – process of producing internal threads on the workpiece.
8. Milling operation - Is the process of cutting metals with multiple tooth rotary cutters.
9. Surface Grinding – is the process of producing a fine and smooth surface finish.
10. Drilling – the process of producing hole in the workpiece.

  16. Drilling – the process of producing hole in the workpiece.
  1. Toolbit - is a non-rotary cutting tool used in metal lathes
  2. Center drill - is used for drilling a hole on the axis of a shaft to hold it between centers.
  3. Tap drill – used to produce internal threads on the workpiece.
  4. Vernier caliper - is a device that lets the user measure more precisely than could be done unaided when reading a uniformly divided straight or circular measurement scale.
