Age Group Restrictions

Junior Teams: Students must be in K-6 and under 13 years of age as of December 31of the competition year. (Exception: Accelerated Student)

Accelerated Students: K-8 Schools If a student has been accelerated and is in grade seven at age 11 (eleven) as of December 31 of the school year the student is eligible to play on the school's Junior or Intermediate team but not both.

Intermediate Teams: (Grades 7 & 8) Students must be under 15 years of age as of December 31 of the competition year. Students must play in one division for each sport i.e., if an eleven year old plays on the Junior volleyball team in an area or final meet he/she may not participate in the Intermediate division competition.

Length of Games

Intermediate: 4 quarters- each 7 minutes in length from Sweet 16 and BEYOND STOP time in place at all times.

Junior: 4 quarters- each 6 minutes in length from Sweet 16 down STOP time in place at all times.

Time-Out Procedures :

(FIBA rules with high school modifications) http://www.fiba.basketball/documents

  1. Each time-out shall last one minute.
  2. A time-out may be granted during a time-out opportunity.
  3. A time-out opportunity begins when: a. For both teams, when the ball becomes dead, the game clock is stopped and the official has ended his communication with the scorer’s table. b. For both teams, when the ball becomes dead following a free throw. c. For both teams, when a field goal is scored. d. For the team in control of the ball, when the official grants and signals a player’s/head coach’s oral and visual request, and the ball is in control of a player of his team.
  4. A time-out opportunity ends when the ball is at the disposal of an opposing player for a throw-in or a free throw.
  5. Each team may be granted: a) 5 time-outs during the 32-minute playing time in a game. b) 1 time-out during each extra period. c) Unused time-outs may not be carried over into an extra period.

*Note: In the case that time and location become factors when running an area tournament, the following times may be used to alleviate any problems.

  • 2 - 15 minute halves (12 minutes is the minimum) with the last 3 minutes of the second half STOP time.
  • Running time in the 4 th^ quarter of a STOP time game, if the margin is greater than 15 points.

Due to the length of each game and the fact that we have ½ day time slots to run these events, it is recommended that no team play more than 4 games in one day. The area convenor should book facilities with this in mind.

Junior Competition

That the foul line be 4 metres from the backboard or be consistent with the fourth lane space mark whichever is further from the basket. Any “Painted” space or “Key” beyond this line is NOT to be called as a 3 in the key violation.

In Junior Basketball Man-to-Man defense is ENCOURAGED at ALL times (Full court and half court) for all around better skill development (offensive and defensive skills), BUT there will be NO PENALTY if teams choose to play other defenses.

Coaching

  1. Discuss deportment of players both on and off the court. Trash talk will not be tolerated!
  2. Be ready to play at appointed times.
  3. Don’t let players play with basketballs between games.
  4. Students are allowed in the gym, change rooms and on the stage. The rest of the school is out of bounds.
  5. Have your line-up ready (completed scoresheet including names and numbers).
  6. If a team is winning by a substantial margin (30 +) points, the scoreboard should not be used. Continue keeping the score only on the scoresheet.

Basketball Rules

The rules of basketball as set out by will be followed by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

Fouls

Fouls can result in a change of possession or the shooting of free throws.

Defensive Foul - called after any unnecessary or illegal contact either on the ball or away from the ball. Examples are blocking, pushing, hitting, and holding. If the foul occurs on a shooter, the player will have 2 free throws or 3 free throws if fouled attempting a 3 point shot. (1 free throw is awarded if the shot attempt goes in and there is a foul).

Bonus situation: Seven fouls on a team in a half, results in the other team shooting a 1 and 1 bonus free throw on any non-shooting defensive foul. The tenth foul in a half results in the other team shooting double bonus, 2 free throws for any defensive foul.

Offensive Foul - called when the player with the ball charges into a defender who is in a stationary, defensive position.

Tie-Breaking Procedure

Two Teams:

If 2 teams are tied, the tie will be broken first by looking at who won the game played between the 2 teams.

Three teams:

If three teams are tied, look at the best defensive record for the teams involved in the tie-break situation. The team that allowed the fewest points in games involving the three teams will place first. The other two teams will play to determine who moves on.

*Note: A team cannot be eliminated because of the tie breaking procedures based on points. If there needs to be a game to break a tie between two teams it will be one 3 minute stop time game.

Awards

  1. The regional convenor will receive the awards from the D.E.A.A. Vice- President prior to competition dates.
  2. Area pennants are awarded to area winners at the Area Tournaments by area convenors.
  3. The Regional Convenor will present the awards (pennants, crests, T-shirts) to the championship and runner-up teams at the completion of competition.
