Section A
Question1 (14 Marks)
“Since Man has been building, there has been engineering” (H.Straub, 1949). Civil Engineering can
look back on a long history. Which period in history was of most interest to you? Write a short
paragraph explaining why you liked this period best.
Question 2 (14 Marks)
During your research you have come across many important and famous civil engineers. Write a
short pen picture of the one which interested you most.
Question 3 (12 Marks)
“The ultimate aim of all creative activity is a building! The decoration of buildings was once the
noblest function of fine arts, and fine arts were indispensable to great architecture. Today they exist
in complacent isolation, and can only be rescued by the conscious co-operation and collaboration of
all craftsmen. Architects, painters, and sculptors must once again come to know and comprehend
the composite character of a building, both an entity and in terms of its various parts……
Le us therefore create a new guild of craftsmen without the class distinctions that raise an arrogant
barrier between craftsmen and artist! ( Manifesto, Walter Gropius, Bauhaus, 1919)
(a) Reading the above excerpt from the Manifesto by W. Gropius, the founder of the
“Bauhaus” would you be of the same opinion as he?

Section A

Explain in a short paragraph what the institution does for its members and why an engineer should become a member?

Question 5 (a) Write a concise definition of a report. (4 Marks) (b) Describe the purpose and content of each of the following sections of a report:

  • Terms of reference
  • Abstract / Executive summary
  • Procedure
  • Recommendation (16 Marks)

Question 6 (a) Describe the qualities of the voice which can be exploited by an effective speaker. (6 Marks) (b) Explain why eye contact with the audience is such an important feature a of presentation. (6 Marks) (c) Describe the precautions which should be taken prior to using and while using audio-visual equipment. (8 Marks)

Question 7 (a) “It is essential for the success of an Engineering firm to hold regular staff meetings”. Explain the reasons for holding such meetings. (10 Marks) (b) Explain the purpose and content of each of the following in the context of meetings:

  • Notice of meeting
  • Agenda (10 Marks)

Question 8 (a) Mention and discuss three of the main aims of the European Union (EU). (9 Marks) (b) Describe the composition of, and the main powers of, the European Parliament. (11 Marks)
