Advocate of the Year 2019-20: National Mock Trial Competition for Undergraduate Students, Study notes of Law

The advocate of the year 2019-20 is an annual, national mock trial competition open to undergraduate students who have not yet commenced their legal vocational training. The competition aims to examine key skills needed for a professional advocate and is judged by qualified lawyers from bpp university law school. The competition consists of two regional heats and a grand final, with the strongest 16 competitors advancing to the grand final at the old bailey in london.

General Competition Rules
1. Introduction
1.1 Advocate of the Year 2019-20 is an annual, national mock trial competition, open
to undergraduate students who have not yet commenced their legal vocational
tr aining (i.e. BPTC, BTC or LPC), provided they have not previously taken part in
the competition.
1.2 The competition will be judged by BPP University Law School tutors, who are all
qu alified lawyers with real trial experience.
1.3 The case studies used in both the Regional Heats and in the Grand F inal will aim
to r e plicate the early months of practice. T hey will be designed to examine many
of the keys skills which an aspiring barrister needs to develop as a professional
ad vocate.
1.4 The competition will take place on two separate Saturdays, namely:
23 November 2019 (Regional Heats all co mpetitors)
28 March 2020 (Grand Final 16 Finalists)
1.5 All compe titors must be available from 9.00 to 18.00 on both 23 November 2019
an d 28 March 2020.
2. Regional Heats
2.1 The Regional Heats will be held on 23 November 2019 at BPP University Law
Schools in the following cities:
Birmingham: 32-34 Colmore Cir cus, Queensway, Birmingham, B4 6BN
Br istol: Grove Avenue, Bristol, BS1 4QY
Le eds: Whitehall Quay, Leeds, LS1 4HR
London (Holborn): 68-70 Red Lion Street, London, WC1R 4NY
Manchester: St Ja mes’ Bui ldings, 79 Oxf o rd Street, Ma nche ster, M1 6FQ
2.2 Competitors will take part in two short trials over the course of the day: one Criminal
tr ial and one Civil tr ial. They will score marks for the quality of their performance,
while pla ying a specific role at that trial. Every competitor will per form one role
du r ing each trial, which BPP will allocate at random and notify each competitor of
in advance. Each competitor will perform twice overall in their Regional Heat, which
will include one witness handling performance (i.e. Examination-in-Chief or Cross-
Examination), where professional actors play the roles of the witnesses.

General Competition Rules

1. Introduction

  • 28 March 2020 (Grand F inal – 16 F inalists) 1.5 All competitors must be available from 9.00 to 18. 00 on both 23 November 2019 and 28 March 2020.

2. Re gional Heats

2.1 The Regional Heats will be held on 23 November 2019 at BPP University Law Schools in the following cities:

  • M anchester : St James’ Buildings, 79 Oxford Street, Manchester, M1 6F Q 2.2 Competitors will take part in two short trials over the course of the day: one Criminal trial and one Civil trial. T hey will score marks for the quality of their performance, while playing a specific role at that trial. Every competitor will perform one role during each trial, which BPP will allocate at random and notify each competitor of in advance. Each competitor will perform twice overall in their Regional Heat, which will include one witness handling performance (i.e. Examination - in-Chief or Cross- Examination), where professional actors play the roles of the witnesses.

2.3 The strongest 16 competitors (‘Finalists’) across all the Regional Heats will go through to the Grand F inal , with a minimum of two competitors proceeding to the Grand F inal from each Regional Heat

3. Grand Final

3.1 T he 16 F inalists will compete at the Grand F inal at the Old Bailey in London on Saturday 28 March 2020. 3.2 Finalists will be placed into teams of two and will, in those pairings, conduct two short T rials ( one Criminal and one Civil trial). 3.3 Finalists will perform two roles in each trial, being four different roles over the course of the day. Each performance will be marked, and such marks will be taken into account when the panel of BPP Judges meet at the end of the day to determine the winner and runners up.

4. Prizes and Feedback

4.1 All competitors will receive feedback from the BPP tutors who judge the Regional Heats and Grand F inal. 4.2 The highest scoring team in each regional heat will receive personal certificates and a small cash prize for their University Law or Bar Society, provided that if a Composite T eam wins a Regional Heat, such cash prize will shared in due proportions between the relevant societies of the universities attended by the members of such Composite T eam. 4.3 All F inalists will receive certificates in recognition of their achievement of reaching the Grand F inal. 4.4 The winner will be awarded the ‘Advocate of the Year Winners Scholarship’ , which will be a sub stantial fee discount for BPP’s new Barrister T raining Course (‘BTC’) with further BT C scholarship prizes being awarded to the runners up.

5. Se lection of applicants

5.1 How you can take part is dependent on the university that you attend:

  • BPP will invite the Bar or Law Society of specific universities to select a four- person team from the members of that Bar/Law Society to compete ; or
  • Students at other universities will be invited to apply for a place on one of a number of Composite T eams.
