A Sabbath on the Longest Day of the Year
(Critique Paper)
A Sabbath on the Longest Day of the Year is published in 2021. The summary of the story is that
when the sacred picture of the Virgin finally arrives in the city, Historia and Criselda, whose
lives are about to change, both refuse to conform on the most important day of their lives in the
most unremarkable way possible, that is, by doing nothing. Directed by Edmund M. Telmo, with
Chriscel Ann Maribojoc as Criselda and Nicole Pangilinan as Historia. Overall, it was a good
film, and I somehow enjoyed it. Honestly, I was creeped out at the beginning of the movie.
As their lives are about to change, Historia and Criselda choose to ignore the most important day
of their lives by acting with no interest, which essentially means doing nothing on the day the
sacred picture of the Virgin returns to the city. Throughout "A Sabbath of the Longest Day of the
Year," memory loss, personal growth, the combination of pagan and religious symbols, and the
symbolic significance of the summer solstice are all major topics and ideas. The protagonists'
life-changing events are set against the backdrop of this celestial event, which represents shifts
and changes. Questions about faith and tradition are brought up by a combination of pagan and
religious components. Memory loss emphasizes how temporary life is, and people's personal
growth is important as they navigate crucial situations. The film's profundity is enhanced by
these themes and motifs, which also offer spectators an insightful examination of the human
condition. The cast did well in giving the expressions in the film, which made me understand
what the characters were feeling, which is good. The black and white background gave it a nice
touch since the film is quite creepy, and the yellow-colored subtitle enhanced the feeling of
nostalgia in the film. However, the videography of the film is sometimes shaky, like in the scene
near the ending where Historia is walking on a path alone and suddenly gets caught by the
parade, which can cause motion sickness in the viewers. These issues arise because watching
these kinds of films frequently results in abnormal eye movements that make people unwell. The
mechanism by which the eyes react when an object typically approaches a person is known as
visual accommodation (Mukherjee, 2010).
Overall, the film is good. Even though it did cause me dizziness, they still delivered the movie
pretty well. The film invites viewers to reflect on the importance of turning points in life, the
impact of customs and religious beliefs, and the fleeting essence of human existence. Even if the
movie has its share of strong points and bad points, its variety of themes and vivid storytelling
make it an engaging film that stays in your memory long after the credits have rolled. 'A Sabbath
of the Longest Day of the Year' is a film that encourages contemplation and dialogue, making it a
valuable addition to the cinematic environment, regardless of the viewer's attraction to the
complex interplay of symbolism or the fundamental questions it poses about the human
condition."
